We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Jewell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Photography has been a lifelong passion, ignited the moment I first used my mother’s film camera in a high school photography class. I bought my first professional DSLR with my first bonus from a full-time job many many years ago and dedicated myself to capturing landscapes and travel moments. Recently, with the purchase of a mirrorless camera, I decided to take the leap and officially turn my passion into a business—and I’ve loved every minute of the journey since.
What should our readers know about your business?
What sets me apart from other photographers is the range of options I offer, especially in event photography at a reasonable price. I don’t believe in limiting the number of photos my clients receive, ensuring they have a full collection of moments from their special day. With a background in video editing from my college studies, I bring a unique storytelling approach to every event, capturing the essence of the experience through both candid and posed shots.
Hard work and dedication have brought me to where I am today. This past year, I’ve faced challenges that tested my resolve—doubts crept in during slower times—but my persistence in advertising and reaching out to clients helped things turn around.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to never give up on your dreams. The photography market is saturated, but if you stay committed, produce great work, and maintain excellent communication, success will follow.
I may be new to the industry, but my years of experience in photography and my storytelling expertise from video editing make me confident in my ability to capture both the candid moments and timeless shots that will be cherished for years to come.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local
spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many great spots within the city, being from Pennsylvania, anyone who comes to visit me is most likely from the east coast, so we have to do the full CA tour when they’re here!
I find myself driving people to Laguna beach most often, the views are gorgeous and the sunsets are stunning. The little cafe’s are restaurants with all the art gallery’s provides the perfect vibe of relaxation and fun.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My late friend deserves all the credit for giving me the push I needed to start my photography business. He was always encouraging me to do more, offering advice on how to get started, and guiding me to the right tools. His belief in me gave me the confidence I needed, and without him, I wouldn’t have taken that leap.
