We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Butler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my career in marketing and advertising working in large corporate agency settings and it was very obvious that we as reps were part of a large machine, generating revenue with little regard for the clients. We were often encouraged to sell any product to any client, whether it was a good fit for their business, whether their business was ethical, values and opinions did not matter. I was also going slowly insane working long hours, with high-pressure goals, and micromanaging superiors constantly threatening our commissions and jobs. I saw everything that was wrong with the way digital marketing agencies were operating and I wanted to build something better. I wanted to create an agency for brands and businesses, where the goal is never to sell products but to provide the best services to fit their needs and reach their goals. I also wanted to ensure we were working with progressive brands, forward-thinking businesses, and hopefully encourage businesses to better themselves. And lastly, I wanted to cultivate a work environment of positivity, encouragement, kindness, and progress. At The Fairway Collective, we prioritize work/life balance, working remotely, traveling often, supporting social justice movements, and encourage my clients and staff to think forward.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is The Fairway Collective, an all-inclusive digital marketing agency in San Diego. We focus on inbound marketing such as social media, organic search, paid advertising, brand development, and creative content development to elevate a brand’s presence in the digital space and move our clients forward. But our clients are already moving FORWARD… At TFC we are proud to partner with female-owned businesses, minority-owned businesses, businesses working to better our world, businesses that take a political stance for a greater good, businesses working toward clean energy, sustainable production, environmental protection, social justice. Our agency is dedicated to working with the best of the best to ensure we are serving a collective good and moving our world in the right direction. Limiting the types of businesses and brands we would be willing to work with may sound like a challenge but contrarily it has established our agency as dedicated to our ethos and the right agency for the best clients. We’ve learned that in business and in life, it’s worth it to stick with your values and to maintain sight of your mission. By not compromising, we have developed a powerful reputation and amazing relationships with our clients. We like to use the phrase ‘Fairway Forward’ as a hashtag, mentality, and mantra. I would love for the world to know that it’s not only ok to stick with your values as a business, but can and will be a foundation for success.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would suggest you spend the week exploring the amazing little neighborhoods of San Diego! Hit the beach in Encinitas, grab brunch in Little Italy and walk the Saturday farmer’s market, catch the free outdoor yoga class in Balboa Park on Sunday, and pick a different beachside restaurant each evening to watch the sunset!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout out Jason Fried, president of 37signals. Jason has written multiple booked but two in particular completely shaped my vision for my business and perspective of the industry as a whole. Reading Rework and then Remote lead me to become the business owner I am today. If you are considering starting a business or just want a new perspective on work/life, I highly highly recommend you read both of these books!
