We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, what do you want your legacy to be?
If there is one thing I hope to leave in my wake it is a significant change in the way that we support, care for, and understand pre and postnatal care. There is much still unknown, but also so much evidence to suggest that the health of a child-bearing woman deeply impacts the health of her offspring long term. Changing the way we support the mental health, physical well-being and nutrition of a mom, leads to better outcomes for mom and baby. If I could impact the system of care for these woman I truly believe the next generations will see a brighter future.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
University of California Health Milk Bank is the first milk bank associated with a major hospital system and led by a physician. We are the 30th non-profit human milk bank in North America and an accredited member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). In 2010 Lisa Stellwagen MD, and Jae Kim MD, PhD started working on a plan for a milk bank that would partner with a local blood bank and utilize their internal delivery systems. As luck or fate would have it, in 2014 I (Hannah) met these two amazing doctors and this dynamic team was able to help bring the plan to fruition. We came together and started working on a plan for a milk bank that would not only help educate new parents, but offer local resources and embrace the latest technologies in the processes. We are raising the standard for infant nutrition, and while our work starts locally we hope to incite change across the nation. There have been an abundance of hurdles along the way but the biggest lesson learned is to have patience and perseverance. Nothing amazing happens overnight, and it takes a really strong and dedicated team to make these things happen. We are so lucky to have a team supporting the work across the UC Campuses.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to Dr. Lisa Stellwagen. Over the past five years I have become a co-founder to an amazing organization that was her dream, as well as becoming a mom to boisterous boys. There is no way I could have made it through either of those journeys without her support. She is so humble, gracious and knowledgeable when it comes to babies and new moms. Her life’s work has been showing up for this group of humans and it shows when everyone we run into smiles, gives her a hug, and has a story of how she affected their life. It is truly an honor to work along side her making the UC Health Milk Bank a reality.
