We had the good fortune of connecting with Guillermo Malfavon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Guillermo, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my early success can be summed up in one word, caring. The health and fitness industry has shifted over the years towards just getting a lot of clients and giving everyone something very generic that might get some short-term results. I decided to focus on the opposite of that. I do not overwhelm myself with a lot of clients so that I get to pay full attention to my clients and personalize everything about their plan. In this industry you can fake a lot of things, but what you cannot fake is how much you care about people, and I believe that is a big point that drives people towards my brand. In here you are never going to feel that you are not being heard, which a lot of people have experienced hiring a lifestyle coach.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
This month precisely, I was able to celebrate my first anniversary of Gains by Guillermo (GBG). Being that this is my first year completed, I am still learning a lot when it comes to expansion and scaling my business to reach a wider audience. What has been setting me apart and giving me the success I have so far is that, everything in this health and fitness industry is very generic and even when certain companies say that it is personalized, it is still something pre-made and not necessarily actually for you. That is where my business excels because in most cases, we get to make your plan together. I gather all the info I need to get to know you on a deeper level and get to really coach you through all the bumps and hurdles to get to your goals that you desire. All plans should be specific to the person. We cannot expect the same plan for a stay-at-home mom compared to a busy CEO of a company or seasoned athlete.
This journey has not been easy, but it has been extremely rewarding. Being the only employee that can do the work, but at the same time be your own HR department, administration, payroll, marketing, it definitely becomes a challenge quickly. I have had to learn a lot about business and still learning more about it to set my foundation strong so we can keep growing and helping more people reach their goals.
I want the world to know that GBG is not just another health and fitness brand that claims to personalize things for you but does not. This is actual custom plans for you. When it comes to health, all aspects matter, therefore it is not just coaching through nutrition, but we take your activity into consideration, your stress, your sleep, your hormones, etc. and we try to improve on all aspects so you can improve your quality of life while reaching your goals.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many things to see and experience in this beautiful city of San Diego that it would be hard experiencing everything. I would have to say as far as experiences, I would take my best friend paragliding at Torrey Pines, paddleboarding as Mission Bay, walks at Balboa Park, go to a Padres game in downtown, and go hiking at Potato Chip rock.
As far as food, there is so many good places so I guess I would target a specific area of San Diego and go from there. For example, I would take my best friend to have some Italian food at Little Italy, some Mexican food at Barrio Logan, some steak in downtown, some seafood at Seaport Village, some brisket in El Cajon, and some breakfast in either North Park or Hillcrest.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout must be towards my family, especially my wife. I have always had the support from both my mom and my wife when I did not know what I wanted to study. After changing my major a couple of times, I landed on nutrition and found my true passion. After graduating SDSU, I have held nutrition jobs in different settings which really helped expand my knowledge in different environments, but I still felt like I could make a bigger impact. In that struggle, of not knowing if launching my own business was going to be successful enough to pay the bills, I was working a full-time job and doing my own practice on the side. My time was very limited, and I was sacrificing a lot of family time. After having several discussions with my wife, she let me quit my stable income job and launch my business full-time and I could not thank her enough. I am able to spend more time with my family now and feel like I am slowly making that impact I wanted to make with everyone that is looking for help, while still being able to be financially stable.
