We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabriella Kohr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabriella, why did you pursue a creative career?
Ever since I was child I was always interested in drawing, painting, fashion and creating worlds of my own. Through this innate upbringing of constant creativity I followed my passion within the arts. By pursuing a career in painting, as well as starting DéKohr Studio, an online clothing store, I have pursued my childhood dream. For me, I feel as though painting and developing DéKohr has allowed me to express myself in all facets of my creative being. Through this expressive creative outlet it has allowed me to pursue a life that fulfills my desires, and brings me the utmost joy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an artist, a painter and muralist. I work primarily with oil paintings, watercolors, and charcoal. My work is a reflection of what I see and experience daily. Painted fragmentations of my observations from life. A majority of my work consists of complex yet harmonious stories told in a painting with the people, places and things that I admire in my life. An exploration of my mind and how these constructed beings and things that surround me influence my aesthetic and point of view. My work ranges in scale from small to larger then life size. My work is mostly painted from life as I see it. Without the constriction of having to base my work off a photo or pixelated image on a screen it allows for me to explore a more expressive and direct painting process. I’ve gotten to where I am today by nourishing the artist inside me that exists. I’ve wanted to quit several times and I just knew that I had to keep pursuing this to get better, and to do it for myself. There have been many hardships and I know there will be more in the future but by pursuing a career that fills me with so much joy is something I will endlessly work hard for.

Aside from painting I also own and run DéKohr Studio, a vintage clothing shop, selling one of a kind pieces that I have carefully curated. DéKohr has allowed me to express myself through fashion, something I hold very dear to my heart. Fashion is inspired by art, mirroring one another and working among two businesses allows my creative freedom to constantly be flowing, inspiring myself through vintage pieces, and vice versa.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite spots in the city would have to be first and foremost the beautiful beaches. To a newcomer I would take them to my favorite coves in Laguna, swim through coves and play in tide pools. Grab lunch at a local taqueria, or at Zinc or Active Culture, go for another dip in the sea or maybe a quick surf, then dinner at Ahba and head to the speak easy next door.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Thank you to my family, my partner and my friends for always supporting my creative endeavors. As well as a special thank you to Kandi Patterson for recommending me.
