We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabriel Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabriel, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was originally born in Los Angeles California, my parents had married very young so getting a divorce soon after wasn’t a surprise to most. When I was around 6 years of age my parents had divorced and my dad took custody of me(the best dad anyone could as for). I had dealt with a lot of depression because I had no idea what was going on. I think many kids think they were at fault and blaming myself was my top priory. As the years went by, I had gotten into the church group that after many years of being part of, wanted to leave because I felt I was being forced and manipulated into doing things but the church kept going at me and my dad. All of that occurred my freshman year of high school. Even more so I had developed depression, suicidal thoughts, I had felt that my whole life was a lie. That’s when I started my journey of being a photographer, and I met a girl who didn’t just help me out the rubble, but made me understand that life has more meaning than I thought. As I went through my years of high school, our relationship began growing toxic, nothing with harm, just us being kids not knowing how love works. All of these experiences gave me meaning and passion to purse photographer and film making even more to give myself that creative outpost. And now I live in Arkansas where nature is just growing everywhere and the beautiful destinations never seems to amaze me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others? The fact that I have so much support from not just my family and friends, but those who gave me a hard time in high school, or those who had bullied me due to my looks. Today, a lot of people, especially kids are incredibly talented in my field, 14 year old’s have edited and shot incredible photo’s and videos, its the fact that we are kids that many adults look down on us, that the photo industry never gives us a chance, that with those very few who slip through the cracks and become big in the game at just 14, there are so much more who cant slip through who have to jump over the cracks and then find out the crack is years wide. I want others to see the hardships I went through and see that an unfortunate event dose not define your future or who you are. I sometimes still have dreams of my time in the church and sometimes I have nightmares, it wasn’t easy overcoming the depression, but its because I had those around me who cared for me that I could take those steps one day at a time. My brand is this, BE FREE, BE CREATIVE, BE POSITIVE. Be free is to not live and create for anyone else but you, don’t let others define who you are when your art is what amplifies your voice. Be creative, there’s always the times when inspiration of others photos hits, but don’t copy it verbatim for verbatim, arts is suppose to give YOUR VOICE, not someone else. Be positive, we all have our ups and downs, and being sad is not always a bad thing, but there’s always a light at the end of that tunnel, no matter who cliché it may sound.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Because I haven’t lived in Arkansas enough , I’ll go by California. I’ve had the pleasure of traveling a lot in California, and around Los Angeles, I would take them to the coastal regions, Huntington beach, visit the pier, and take some bikes to bike around the area around evening time. Then we would go eat at the local burger restaurants there, the next day we would drive up to Angeles Crest and shoot some videos taking sharp turns and drone video of spin outs. Money is very high in Los Angeles so going to restaurants are more of high luxury for us. There’s many car meets here in Los Angeles some races you have to be waiting for in order to participate in that goes in a deserted parking lot. Mexican truck there are one of the most heavenly spots we would go to. We would also go to the Beverly hotel, the flowers there make for amazing spring photos and a nice walk, when my and buddies would be in high school the mall and bowling alley was our spots, so going there is top priority to buy some clothes and mess around as a friend group again. There’s this amazing Vietnamese restaurants in San Gabriel called Phou Super Bowl, that was our spot for good evening food.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If not for my dad, I wouldn’t be here, I would be 6 feet undergrounds or stuck in that church, or still in that toxic relationship me and the girl both contributed too. My dad has always been there, when things got rough with my mom, he was there, when I was depressed, he gave me a ride and talked to me, he is everything and I cant see anywhere I would be without him. He isn’t just the parent who pushes their son to go for their dreams, but sets up mile stones to make sure I have a responsible adult life while doing so. He is by definition, what a parent should be, and of course we bump heads but no parent docent bump heads with their kids and I’m more than happy to have him as a dad. My dream of having money to finical support myself and others would go towards my dad to payback all he has done for me, but first I need to finish my education and better grasp business pursuits.
