We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eric, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It began with a question that I put in a journal entry once. How can I provide my talents as a teacher, healer, and guide to others while retaining ownership in what I create with a flexible schedule that supports my children’s needs? The answer was to work as a mobile independent practitioner.

In the beginning, it is essential that I am able to schedule my clients around the needs of my family which to date has been working out quite well. I can run the administrative side of my business from home, travel locally for client appointments, and then be back in time to pick up my kids from school or activities.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My background as a guide, healer, and coach began 13 years ago when I moved out of the corporate world into the health and fitness community. I began as a Personal Trainer helping my clients at a local gym near where I grew up. It was during these early years I met my long-term mentor who introduced me to energy healing, meditation, yoga, mindset, and so on, I returned to school gaining graduate degrees in physiology and in education along with earning additional certifications in life coaching and in several Reiki healing modalities.

As the years went by and I continued to do my own inner work of healing, my offerings to the community through reiki, wellness coaching, and fitness began to grow.

But it was last year that I had made the choice to end my time working in a gym/clinical environment. It was also a moment to choose what aligned with my inner soul the most, that was starting Guiding Light, my own Reiki Practice.
The vision behind Guiding Light is to support the unification of mind, body, and soul by shining a light upon the path of someone who is struggling because of trauma or facing a difficult life transition.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love San Diego bay! I often bring visitors to the bay, rent a boat, and spend the day boating around and checking out the sites! We have taken whale tours, dinner cruises, paddle boarding, and jet skis you name it. There is a lot happening in the bay. I love the energy there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I want to thank my long-time mentor Taye Im, who dedicated many years of time to help me on my personal journey of mind, body, and spirit. Also to Shelby Strother right here in San Diego who has supported me in starting my Reiki healing business and continues to support me today! Of course, I can’t leave out my family who continues to funnel love my way and have become my biggest cheerleaders. There are others here in San Diego who have also supported me in growing as a Reiki practitioner, you know who you are, I love and appreciate you all!

One author that still inspires me to this day is Dr. Wayne Dyer. While he has passed on, his works still encourage me to look at life through a more dynamic lens while inspiring me to live a life full of possibilities!
