We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Sams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emma, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
There have been a lot of decisions – some bigger than others – that upon reflection have all been invaluable stepping stones that have gotten me to where I stand today. I’m happy to share two that I cherish!
The first was the decision to truly accept that if you develop your ideas in small steps, they can become great accomplishments. This mind set shift gave me clarity to find starting points for my projects and ideas. This allowed me to create daily, weekly, and monthly attainable goals. From there I was able to celebrate small victories and stay motivated through any failures. I became excited about my journey instead of feeling overwhelmed by the end results I wanted to achieve.
Secondly, I would be remiss not to mention the decision to make my art and business about helping others. I originally started making these colorful creations just for fun and because they were making me happy. I found their iridescent and changing rainbow colors to be therapeutic and meditative. When I realized that through this art, I could provide and share this experience with others, it became my main purpose for creating. Focusing on this made it possible to set aside my insecurities, share these designs, and ultimately grow as an artist and entrepreneur.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art and business – Rainbow Solstice! I started Rainbow Solstice after falling in love with the exploration of color and light through iridescent materials. Glass frames and sun hats have been my main focus. These designs are unique and one of a kind as they refract sunlight to create beautiful rainbows.
My frames tend to feature “Earthy” elements like flowers, leaves and cruelty free or ethically gathered butterflies. When placed in a window or any sunlit area, they act as a prism or sun catcher to create a scintillating display of color throughout your space – the results are immensely joyful and mesmerizing to experience!
My hats come in all different styles; from a casual floppy sun hat to an elegant flat brim fedora. They are eye-catching and enigmatic and feature iridescent shaped diamonds that sparkle at night and allow rainbows to dance upon your cheeks during the day.
I came up with the idea around 2+ years ago. It took me about a year of experimenting and a lot of “trial and error” to figure out a successful process.
Along the way, I have learned to be patient with the process, and that The Universe rewards those who take risks. Overall, I feel grateful for my journey and I hope to continue to bring people happiness and beauty through my creations!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Yes of course, there are so many amazing places to check out in San Diego!
To start, I always love walks around Balboa Park. I’m a beach girl so I would also suggest checking out Blacks Beach because it has soft sand, is less crowded, and has a beautiful trail that leads down to the water. If you are in Old Town, check out South American Imports! I love to shop for crystals there.
Food wise, I love Harbor Town Pub for breakfast and Bloody Mary’s. For lunch, I think The Wise Ox in North park has best Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. For dinner and drinks I would suggest Lumi down town on 5th Ave. It’s a rooftop lounge with a great vibe and the best sushi in San Diego!! Lastly, Starlite in Mission hills has delicious cocktails and a great atmosphere.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this to my boyfriend Derek Zimmerman for his support and encouragement and to one of my best friends Siobhan for always being there for me.
