We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Shelly Valdez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Shelly, how does your business help the community?
I love this question because it speaks to the reason I began my business. I was at the end of a year-long cancer treatment, in which I had 16 chemo infusions, surgery, and 33 radiation treatments. At that time, I began looking for something natural to detoxify my body and our home. I found essential oils, became obsessed with their extensive benefits and found a new way of living. I celebrated 5 years cancer free last October! I didn’t start out wanting to be in business. Really, I just wanted to share these wonderful solutions with everyone! And to do that, I became a Wellness Advocate and I now get to teach people how to use medicinal grade essential oils to take care of their family and their home. I mentor men and women of all ages and ethnicities, in all parts of the world how to share these powerful oils and build a home-centered business. With my business, I get to be part of something much greater than myself. The company I work with (doTERRA) sources over 100 different essential oils from over 40 nations. Instead of buying large plots of land and mass-producing oils, they focus on the knowledge of the local farmers, who have been growing the specific plants for generations. They choose locations where the plants will have the best chemistry for the most potent and healthful quality essential oils and where they can improve the individual, social, economic, and environmental well-being of the farmers and their families. They even founded a not-for-profit 501©3 called Healing Hands that builds schools, wells, medical clinics, and more in poverty-stricken areas around the globe. Healing Hands has teamed with Operation Underground Railroad (OUR) to free over 1,000 child victims around the world from sex trafficking and place survivors on the path to recovery through localized aftercare services. Another partner is Days for Girls, which teaches girls in underdeveloped countries about feminine hygiene and gives them supplies so they can continue in school. At the 2017 doTERRA Convention, I got to participate with more than 300 employees and Wellness Advocates as we assembled 5,110 hygiene kits, establishing a place in GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™. Healing Hands also includes a micro-loan program that includes mentorships, business training, and financial services to help people build a solid foundation for themselves and their families. Over 4.3 million people have benefited from this program with nearly $77 million loaned and a 97% historical repayment rate. This gives families decent housing, food, education for their children, and more. And I have the opportunity to participate in many of these programs in person in countries lie Nepal, Guatemala, and Haiti. In summary, I hope you can see how grateful I am to be a part of a business like this. I knew from the beginning that if I were ever to start my own business, the company had to have a beautiful mission and big heart. I have the coolest job! I get to empower people and communities on such a huge scale and advocate for positive change across the world.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business revolves around providing the best service and education to my clients. I don’t just sell them a product and set them on their way. I serve as an ongoing resource and teach them how to provide and use the best solutions for themselves and their families. I’m proud of being able to make a difference in others’ lives to show them how to have physical, emotional, and financial wellness and I love being part of a broader international community that is dedicated to serving the planet and lifting others. It has been a journey. Starting a business is never easy. There are always challenges but I have found that the biggest challenges were always my own mental blocks and self-imposed limitations and, once I was able to reframe them, I was better able to adapt and overcome and help others do the same. I love teaching others about natural physical and emotional wellness and I love mentoring new colleagues in their own businesses to become financially healthy as well. My products are from a multi-billion dollar, debt-free, integrity-based company that is heart-centered and deeply involved in on-going humanitarian efforts around the world. And the service I provide is based on my decades of research and learning about how to educate others as a servant-leader.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow- before the pandemic my answer would have been different. Right now I’d show them hiking trails and lakes and I would show them the natural beauty that is San Diego from Balboa Park and our nature preserves, from our beautiful beaches to the exquisite vistas seen from the many mountains in and around us. I would still have them order from my favorite healthy restaurants including Garden Kitchen in the college area. I’d show them our history, like Old Town and the Star of India. I’d give them a feel for the diversity of our great city, from its people to the variety of foods, architecture, and landscapes.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Dedicated to my clients who allow me to be of service to their health and to my mentors who taught me how to share my passion for natural wellness solutions to make a difference in the lives of others.
