We had the good fortune of connecting with Diane Covington Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diane, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I like to write stories that inspire readers. My story about Finding the French orphan my father tried to adopt during World War II, for example. When the story appeared in Reader’s Digest, people tracked me down with phone calls, handwritten notes and emails to tell me how much they loved the story. That it made them cry.
That story is all about the power of love.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have written three memoirs and one Young Adult novel One of my memoirs, Finding Gilbert, a Promise Fulfilled, won a Gold award from the Society of American Travel Writers.
My novel, Beautiful Courage, a Young Woman’s Journey West, won a “Willa Award” in honor of Willa Cather, the novelist who wrote about the American West and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923.
I love to write positive stories that inspire readers. Another memoir, Eight Months in Provence, A Junior Year Abroad 30 Years Late, demonstrates that it is never too late to fulfill a cherished dream.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains in California, and I would tell them to visit in the late summer, if possible. We would go hiking, swimming in the Yuba River, which flows through our area, kayaking in the lake that is near our home, and eat healthy, fresh food on my deck.
Also eat out at local restaurants. My favorite has a deck along Deer Creek, and you eat to the sound of the water rushing over the rocks and watch the sparkles on the water.
I live in a historical town, full of Gold Rush history, with interesting buildings and landmarks, so we would do a walk around town for that.
We also have a vibrant music and theater scene, so we could take in some concerts and plays.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would say the Society of American Travel Writers organization. It helps to be a part of a community of like-minded people and in this case, writers and photographers who are serious about their work.
The networking and meetings are educational and supportive. I have also received many awards from them and you know it is a real award when you are competing with such an outstanding group.
