We had the good fortune of connecting with David Dahl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I have two daughters which I’m proud of. I’m sure they’ve seen the good and bad growing up with me. They are both moral people and assets to society. I pushed on them to be successful and pursue financial success which I was wrong to do that as they both went into other directions as teaching and working at the Humane Society. The things they did take me up on is, hard work, being above the fray, treating all living things with respect and love and to help others. I always told them if you want to be happy, you need to live by a dirty four letter word called work. They have embraced this concept and I know it will serve them well. A friend whose children were extremely successful and I felt I had maybe failed mine, told me, David what really matters is that they are very moral and ethical people and he was right. That is why I am proud of them because they are. I also tried to teach them to love all Southern California sports teams.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have always said what I’m most proud about the station is that it is commercial free. As a standard we don’t deliberately say controversial things on air to generate an audience. That is the easy and sleezy way. Even if we got desperate, I would like to think we wouldn’t resort to that. The station Rocks! Business wise I have not been afraid to take risk you have to if you want something of your own. Unless someone handed you something for nothing and that rarely turns out well you have to take some risk. It has not been easy as I have failed a few times. Even at Yarg our country station was not doing well. although I loved the format it just wasn’t happening, so we made the decision to put it on ice for a year. It’s still up but we are not putting anything into it. The key for me to overcome the challenges was to never give up. As bad and gloomy things get you have to drag yourself out of bed every day and get to it. The lesson I have learned is hard work can conquer all.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
With the virus I would say stay home. Pre virus not much is better than San Diego. We would have to take in a Padres game, what a great stadium. I saw Avenged Sevenfold there, I mention that because they gave us a shout out to our station. I have a friend who sails, I would I take them out. You have to take them to the Zoo because San Diego has one of the best in the world. One night we would go to Old Town for dinner. Old Town was home to father Junipero Serra. Almost any restaurant on the Gaslamp Quarter is great and that area is iconic. It’s also a great place to party. The Maritime Museum with the Star of India and the Soviet era Diesel- Electric Nuclear Submarine is cool to do. The Midway Aircraft Carrier is historic and as an added bonus visitors will be greeted by folks who actually were sailors and Aviators on the ship, they have great stories. One thing most people don’t experience is the City Lights tour. I’d do that just to have something different. If you are adventurous, I’d take you to Torrey pines Glideport where you can solo jump or tandem with an instructor to sore over the cliffs. After that experience you can settle down at Bali Hai restaurant.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has had a major impact on me. My Mother and Father are not living but they raised me and shaped me and taught me to always choice the right. I would like to give a shout out to two people Brad Dahl and Ralph Johnson. Brad is the President at Yargmetal and does a lot of heavy lifting. I think we have the best format and entertaining station that I have ever heard and that is because of Brad. Although he is my younger brother, he has been an example to me as he is a great family man with a great family. Ralph is the reason I play guitar and was a bandmate of mine for years. Ralph also taught me to be a gentler and kinder person. They both have influenced me professionally and musically. Brad and Ralph are both Doctors which I think is cool and they probably owe me money. We bought a company in Connecticut NEMB with great employees. I want to give a shout out to the Vice President Matt Raney and the President Pat Demarco and Peter Andersson of Mean Streak in Sweden
