Meet Danny Garcia | Magical Boy & Pinmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Danny Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danny, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Well I’ve been collecting enamel pins for as long as I can remember, specifically Sailor Moon pins. Growing up as a little boy, I’ve always had an innate interest in so many things considered to be “feminine” and just all things traditionally taboo for a cisman to enjoy. Sailor Moon is probably the most recognizable figure in the “Magical Girl” genre. I noticed the “Magical BOY” genre was extremely lacking, even though I knew for a fact the audience was there for it. Throughout my adulthood I’ve met so many people that share similar interests as myself so I figured if I couldn’t find anything for us, why not make it?
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It really is just a huge culmination of so many things. I’ve just always loved creating things. I use to play guitar and sing a lot in high school, so I made a lot of songs. I use to be in school for Fashion Design, so I made a lot of garments. However, even though I loved doing creative things I was always an introvert and I think that’s where I found my aesthetic and style. When I’m home I find so much inspiration from movies, tv shows, comics, and especially video games. It’s hard to find products, such as clothing and furniture, that correlate to my interests as a nerdy, feminine, queer man. I think what sets my art apart from others is the fact that it has a sense of humor in it, while delivering an impactful body/sex-positive message.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So, I’m definitely a home-body. I don’t necessarily go out to clubs, bars, parties, etc. I find so much comfort and solace from just being at home, watching a horror movie, or playing some video games. The world is a scary place as it is, especially if you’ve worked in customer service for almost a decade now haha. However, I do love shopping! Like I said, I use to go to school for Fashion so I definitely love clothes, although it’s always hard to find something pink for ‘men’. I would probably take my bestie to the mall, maybe an arcade since we both love playing video games. I do a lot of pop-up events in the L.A. area so I know of a great queer café called Detroit Vesey’s in DTLA.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom definitely deserves so much credit for letting me be the little gay boy that I always was growing up. Just allowing me to be my authentic self when I was a kid means so much and I’m so grateful to have her. My partner of 8 years also deserves a huge thank you. I wouldn’t have made so many big decisions without his constant support and reassurance. When I’m having a bad body-image day or just an art block, he always knows what to say or do to make me forget about any of it and remind me why I love arting so much! ^.^
