We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryann Kipping and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ryann, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I help people who are planning a pregnancy or currently pregnant make educated nutrition choices for their pregnancy journey. Pregnancy is both a critical and sensitive time in the mom and babies’ life and a huge piece of making sure this time period is as successful as possible is ensuring adequate nutrition. Research indicates what you eat during pregnancy not only affects your baby but also your grandbaby. I believe I have a very special role in helping multiple generations with good health and hopefully setting up some realistic and sustainable nutrition practices for life.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started this business because I previously worked in a women’s health clinic and found the nutrition guidance was basic and outdated compared to the current scientific evidence available today. Not only that, women are actively seeking out this information and want more than anything to do the best for their future family. It certainly wasn’t easy to leave my 9-5 and jump into the business world which I had no previous training in (they don’t teach you business skills in nutrition school, unfortunately), however, I knew it was the right move. I never stopped thinking about it until I actually did it and I really didn’t see it as a big risk since it was driven by what I’m so passionate about. I’ve learned running a successful business takes a lot of pivoting, learning from mistakes, and taking action every day. Something key in business and in my practice as a dietitian is encouraging progress, even if small, the goal isn’t perfection in business or in nutrition, it’s the ability to make small changes and take small actions every day towards your goals.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Little Italy and take all my visitors there, bonus if we can go to the Farmer’s market on Saturdays, and also make a stop by James Coffee. My husband and I love our coffee so more cool spots would be on the agenda like Communal, Better Buzz, or Achilles. Destinations to visit are definitely Coronado, Sunset Cliffs, the La Jolla seals, and the San Diego Zoo. The best San Diego beach in my opinion is WindnSea! And, food, of course, there are too many good spots to list here but to name a few favorites in different cuisines, Monzu fresh pasta, Costa Brava, Tasty Noodle House, the Taco Stand, and Northside Shack for an acai bowl.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could not be where I am today in my business and career without the support of my husband, and recently, my sister who has bravely joined my team in the midst of a huge app launch. While my husband has not always been hands-on in the business, he has provided me with endless encouragement and motivation to keep going. Both my husband and sister have been key players in the last months of developing a new program and app, and I am beyond grateful to them for making my dream of helping thousands of people come true!
