Meet Daniel Fefferman | Founder of Define Real Estate, San Diego

We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Fefferman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
At its core, my business is about helping people make confident decisions around some of the biggest financial and personal moments of their lives. Real estate is obviously about buying and selling homes, but for me, it goes much deeper than that.
On a practical level, I’m helping people build stability, equity, and long-term opportunity through homeownership and real estate investment. I also work hard to make the process feel clear and manageable, because reducing stress and uncertainty for clients is a real form of service.
Beyond the transaction, I care a lot about the communities we’re serving. Real estate plays a big role in shaping neighborhoods, relationships, and quality of life. Whether it’s helping families through important transitions, supporting local events, or simply being a trusted resource, I want my business to have a positive impact beyond just the sale itself.
At the end of the day, I try to run my business with honesty, service, and a long-term mindset. If people walk away feeling well represented, well cared for, and better positioned for the future, then I feel like we’ve done our job well.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My professional path hasn’t been conventional, but the common thread has always been discipline, service, and a willingness to bet on myself. I was born and raised in San Diego, and I grew up watching my dad run his accounting firm for more than 45 years. From a young age, I learned that you never do wrong by people and that you should approach everything from a place of service. That mindset has shaped every step of my career.
Before real estate, I was a corporate pilot. Going from never having flown a plane to earning my commercial multi-engine license and a jet type rating in about 13 months taught me a lot about discipline, preparation, and client experience. In aviation, details matter, standards matter, and the way people feel in your care matters. I’ve carried those same principles directly into real estate.
In 2017, I left a successful aviation career to pursue real estate full time. It was a major leap into the unknown, especially with a growing family depending on me, but I had already spent years investing, remodeling, and managing properties of my own, so the passion was there. Starting Define Real Estate later on was another step into uncertainty, but it gave me the opportunity to build a business rooted in trust, strategy, and service.
I’m proud of every chapter along the way. Selling over $18 million in my first full 12 months in real estate and being named rookie of the year was a big milestone, and continuing to grow from there has been incredibly rewarding. More than any individual achievement, though, I’m most proud of the example I’m setting for my kids — showing them work ethic, perseverance, and the importance of balancing ambition with family.
What sets me and the Define Real Estate team apart is that we genuinely care. We love what we do, and I believe that shows in the way we communicate, follow through, and take care of our clients. For us, the client experience is everything.
The hardest part of the journey has been carrying the responsibility of providing for my family in a business where the market is always changing and nothing is guaranteed. What kept me grounded was the belief that if I kept doing right by people, everything would work out. At the same time, I’ve always believed in planning ahead, saving, and preparing for the future so I could take smart risks without losing sight of what matters most.
At the end of the day, I want people to know that we’re in this business because we truly love real estate and genuinely believe we’re making a difference in the community. For me, it has never been just about transactions — it’s about helping people through important moments in their lives and building something meaningful the right way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If one of my best friends was coming into town for a week, I’d want them to experience the full range of what makes San Diego so special — great food, the coastline, a little adventure, and the laid-back lifestyle that makes people fall in love with this place.
A perfect first day would start with breakfast in North Park at Breakfast Republic or The Mission, depending on the vibe. North Park has great energy and is one of those neighborhoods that immediately gives you a feel for the city. From there, I’d head down to Seaport Village for lunch — somewhere easy and classic where you can enjoy the bay and take a walk along the waterfront after. If the timing lined up, I’d absolutely try to catch a Padres game at Petco Park while already downtown, because that’s one of the best ways to experience San Diego in a fun, easygoing way. Then I’d finish the day with dinner on the coast in Del Mar at Pacifica Del Mar, where you can sit down, have a great meal, and watch the sunset over the ocean. That’s hard to beat.
If they were here for a full week, I’d definitely make sure they saw some of the staples. The San Diego Zoo is world-famous for a reason, and it’s always worth doing. I’d also plan a day for wine tasting in Temecula, which is close enough for an easy trip and offers a completely different pace and setting. I’d want them to spend time along the coast, see a few of our best neighborhoods, and just experience how much variety San Diego has to offer.
That’s really what makes this place stand out to me. You can start the day in a neighborhood like North Park, spend the afternoon on the bay, end the night on the coast in Del Mar, and then the next day head to the zoo, the beach, the mountains, or wine country. There’s a balance here of great weather, great food, beautiful scenery, and a lifestyle that feels both active and relaxed at the same time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If I had to give a shoutout, it would first go to my clients, and then to my team. I wouldn’t have a business without my clients, so in many ways they really go hand in hand. My business has been built largely through trust, referrals, repeat relationships, and the confidence people place in us during some of the most important decisions of their lives, and I never take that for granted. Right alongside that is my team, because each person brings real strength in their specific role, and that’s a big part of what allows us to create such a high level of service and care. For me, the client experience is everything. The goal is always to make people feel supported, well guided, and confident throughout the process, and that only happens when you have great clients and a great team working together.
