We had the good fortune of connecting with D Benzo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi D, how do you think about risk?
I believe taking risks is a major key in being successful and progressing in your goals. Regardless if the risks pay off or not there’s always something to be gained from the experience. I still tend to overthink and doubt myself but in the back of my mind I know ill never get anywhere playing it safe. Taking the risk to move here when I didnt have much, being out of my comfort zone, and traveling on a very tight budget are just a few things that have helped me grow mentally and also given me experiences that ill cherish forever.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The tattoos I do are more black and grey realism but I dabble in some color given the chance. Im mostly appointment only which allows me the opportunity to give each project the attention it needs while also being able to give a better experience for my clients. I dont think id be where Im at today with out the support of my clientele. Some of them have been coming to me since the beginning of my tattoo career and im grateful for that. It definitley has not been an easy road but nothing worth it ever is. Ive learned just keep your head down and focus on your art. Sometimes my best ideas come to me when im just doodling. With that said, I hope to set aside time to focus on painting more and growing not only as tattoo artist but in other facets of art as well.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well thats a hard question to answer after 2020. Some of my favorite places are gone (shout out bar pink) but then again its San Diego. Theres so much that id like for them to do and see that definitely would take more than a week. With pretty much year round summer here the beaches are a must. Any of them. All of them maybe. Ive always taken friends to old town because its such a unique place and I like old spooky places. Next stop by the plenty of great brewery places around town. Cant forget to take them to pho hoa off el cajon blvd. If you havent been here for your pho fix your missing out!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a bunch of people id like to give a shout out to that helped me along the way. First off, God. Sup God! Im not really religious but I prayed and he/she answered! My family and close friends from the Bay Area to San diego that always supported me through all my ups and downs. The ol’ sinister ink crew that gave me a chance to get in the game to the ol’ superfly tattoo fam! I see ya’ll! Fip Buchanan and the Avalon 2 tattoo crew for letting me call it home. To the whole tattoo industry in general. We’re growing and rough around the edges but you keep me on my toes and I respect that. Lastly, to Christian Quintela, Pua Taliva’a, my Nanay and all those who left these Earthly possessions for the treasures in the sky. I will always attribute any success I am blessed with to them whom have always wished me nothing but success. Okay, go! Go away. Read some books!
