We had the good fortune of connecting with Colin Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Colin, why did you pursue a creative career?
I just couldn’t seem to stick to anything else. I spent a long time wandering around, trying to find something I liked to do that I could make into a career while trying to make the music happen. That didn’t work too well. Then I came across film which is about as easy to break into as music is. but loved it just the same and nothing else really fit so I tried to find a way to combine the two. Working with video to give story to the music and the vice versa.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m trying to make a connection with an audience. I’m trying to catch this feeling. There’s a ping you get inside when you hear a song, or see a story that reminds you of you. A place you’ve been. A time in your life. It’s something like nostalgia. I want to do that in art. In video and music. I think it’s taking account of the things we’ve lost, or left, or left behind. There’s a goodness when you come to terms with it.

So I’m working on an album with accompanying videos. It’s about my first few years after moving to the US, (where I was born). I had a lot of those feelings. Missing home, friends, family, but at the same time being glad to be in a new place. I moved here with someone and had to let that go, so the series is coming to terms with that too. What that means and how that feels, and making work that allows me to figure that all out. And hopefully connects with people to do the same. That transcendence we get through art it’s a good feeling.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In San Diego I’d watch some shows at Soda Bar or Casbah. Have a drink at Black Cat Bar and get some street tacos in City Heights. Then I’d go to Tijuana, they have a great music and arts scene.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My manager Marcelo Garibotto. He lives in Finland but we knew each other from Australia. After I moved to the US and he moved to Finland we stayed in touch. I was going through losing my job and losing my relationship ad had kind of given up on the music. He was at the beginning of starting a new agency and a new relationship. We found each other at just the right time. He came on board and helped me build myself back up.. He saw the vision and took my unreleased catalogue and really supported me to get it out there. He’s been with me through the creation of this new album and video series and I don’t know If I’d be putting it out into the world if he wasn’t there behind the scenes.
