We had the good fortune of connecting with Catherine Seelie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Catherine, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
Something that has had the biggest impact on the mindful parenting technique I use was reading the quote “Make your children adore you” while pregnant. This stuck with me immediately, and has been the driving force behind all of my parenting skills. When I make a mistake (and trust me I make plenty) I am sure to apologize, and explain to my son where I was coming from. I want him to listen to my guidance out of love, and not fear like many of us have been raised to do. He now understands that adults make mistakes, and don’t “know it all” – just like him. I often explain to him that no matter what situation it is, or who is telling him otherwise, he MUST listen to his heart first. Even I don’t know whats best for him. Because he’s been raised to trust me, and see me as a shining light in his life, he follows my direction (as much as a child will), and of course the example I set while also understanding that it is okay to forge his own path. That quote has allowed me to remember every day that my child deserves respect as a human. He was not just a baby, or just a toddler, or now just a young child. He is a human that has thoughts, feelings, wants, and desires, and in parenting we have to remember that in order to gain respect, we have to show it. Children can have off days just as we do, and by holding them to a higher standard than ourselves we are doing them a great disservice.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work is a combination of many things, and with that being said, I feel that it’s so important us to follow ALL of the pulls from our hearts and not try to put ourselves in a box or specific niche. I am a lifestyle and social media content photographer focusing on the magic of childhood, as well as a shaman who writes on all things parenting, transformation, mindfulness, and healing. I am also currently working on my first book as well as appearing on holistic/wellness Podcasts. I am where I am today because of the support from the important people around me, as well as my mentor Ava Johanna. It is SO important to seek help when you are stuck, and because of her push and faith in me, I am now able to have the faith in my business and its message. I overcame a lot of issues with confidence and feeling as if I was not good enough to be doing the things I am doing now. Throughout this journey though, I’ve learned that we are all worthy no matter our background, and that our voices matter. The only way we can find our true voice though, is by following our OWN heart and the whispers of our Soul. We always know the way, so we have to remember that when things get tough or we feel as if we can’t go any further. I want the world to know that it is important to speak about those things that make people uncomfortable. It’s important to forge your own path, instead of following the herd. And it’s important to allow yourself to become uncomfortable while doing so. Only by leaning into that fear or feeling of being uncomfortable will you find your true purpose, wants, and needs.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take visitors (and often do) to all of the main spots of San Diego! That includes Downtown San DIego, Old Town, Seaport Village, La Jolla Cove, Hillcrest, Sunset Cliffs, and so many more! I often have people come to visit and we do just that. 🙂 Some of my favorite places Downtown are Double Deuce where you can ride a mechanical bull (SO fun), The Melting Pot, and Little Italy. My favorite hikes are Torrey Pines, Cowles Mountain, and Potato Chip Rock. I’ve also done all of those with my son so they are kid-friendly and have gorgeous views! If you’re looking for delicious food or a date-night, North Park is your place to be. Two of my favorite restaurants there are Encontro and Waypoint Public. Waypoint Public also has a great play area for kids! And right next to Encontro is the most delicious desert spot called Le Parfait Paris. I could honestly go on and on because there is so much to enjoy in this city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without reading the book “The Untethered Soul” by Michael Singer, I would not be where I am today. His words gave me exactly the tools I needed to not only understand my thought process, but to transform it as well. I am always quick to recommend Singer’s book to anyone on their own healing journey, whether from anxiety, depression, or whatever else. I have also come this far in my business and healing journey because of my amazing husband who has put his faith and trust in my decision-making over and over again, even when everything would appear that he shouldn’t. He has held me up so many times when I didn’t think I could go another step and I am forever grateful for him. Last, I have to recognize my spiritual teacher. Her name is Tree and she is the most amazing woman ever, and is just like the grandma in Moana which I LOVE to tell people (haha). Because of her love and guidance, I have made it through some of my darkest moments while becoming the healer I am meant to be.
