We had the good fortune of connecting with Cassiopeia Guthrie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cassiopeia, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz, were transformative for me. They essentially read as follows:
1. Be impeccable with your word;
2. Don’t take anything personally;
3. Don’t make assumptions; and
4. Always do your best. By leaning into the best, most authentic version of myself as I navigate through the unique situations that life throws at us (agreements 1 and 4), I know that I do so with integrity and my actions will always be in alignment with my beliefs. Just as importantly, agreements 2 and 3 give me the opportunity to put situations in context prior to acting and serve as a reminder to trust others at their word and to believe that they are operating with that same intrinsic goodness.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a non-traditional background with dual careers in K-12 education and PR/project management and have spent the past couple of decades stretching my wings in a variety of capacities. It has been a unique trajectory with a wide range of experiences, but one that has been immensely rewarding. While my degree is in Journalism and initial graduate work was in Education, I began my professional career in law enforcement technology support before moving into the classroom as a teacher. When my children were small, I took a few years’ hiatus from teaching to focus on motherhood; it was during that time (and thanks to connections within the parenting community) that I made a professional move into the project management and marketing communications realm, where I was responsible for overseeing projects and campaigns for private businesses as well as for a full-service PR and branding agency. During the same time, I also became entrenched in the nonprofit world, serving in an executive capacity with Patio Playhouse, which also inspired my later involvement in a variety of other organizations: the San Diego Performing Arts League – Theatre Alliance, More Than Apples, and the BIPOC Support Foundation. In 2018, I returned to education where I bridged my experiences and I currently serve in the capacity of District Educational Technology TOSA for a local secondary school district. My life is very full between my professional responsibilities, my EMBA program, my volunteer work, my passion for the arts (I moonlight as an actor in local theatre productions), and my family… but it is the very best type of full: the kind that makes me excited to start each new day and to see how else I can contribute towards making the world a better place.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego boasts so many incredible places: a tour of the city would invariably include a combination of beach time, local craft coffee dates, a trip to some favorite restaurants (Din Tai Fung and Campfire, among others), a meandering day through Balboa Park, hitting up the Museum of Us, a shopping spree through some local small businesses on the coast, and cocktails at the Top of the Hyatt.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would be remiss if I failed to mention the incredible talent and dedication of our all-volunteer boards at the organizations that I volunteer with, Patio Playhouse, More Than Apples, and BIPOC Support Foundation. Though we come from different walks of life and possess many different skills as a result of our experiences, the collaboration and passion each team contributes towards its associated cause gives each organization its life.
