We had the good fortune of connecting with Casey Handy-Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Casey, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

I’ve always had a passion for supporting creative pursuits, and monetizing talent through entrepreneurship.

I come from a long line of musicians and educators, including W.C. Handy, the father of the Blues. So I’ve always had a knack for explaining and teaching while helping creatives protect their work.

In college, I often got called on to explain concepts like copyright law to the class. Outside of class, I supported my classmates (musicians) in developing business strategies, reviewing contracts, and protecting their brand assets. But I knew I needed the technical skills and knowledge to really serve in this capacity and be a voice for my community.

In law school, while my peers were worried about on-campus interviews and landing jobs at big law firms, I was focused on starting my own law firm to support creatives.

Too often, creatives are subjected to predatory business practices that take advantage of their intellectual property, and face an intentional lack of education, information, and resources about entrepreneurship. I’m committed to a world where creative gifts are rooted in ownership, protected from predatory practices, and honored through equitable business partnerships that build generational wealth and legacy.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Sure! I actually have two businesses. My law firm, C. Handy Law, and my digital product business, Boss Contract Society.

C. Handy Law is an entertainment and intellectual property law firm that partners with creatives and entrepreneurs to protect their legacy, build a solid legal foundation, and negotiate their worth. We work with multi-6 and 7 figure creators to provide custom legal support and solutions.

Boss Contract Society provides done-for-you contract templates for online business owners so that they can confidently run their businesses with ease. I’m really excited to be expanding this facet of the business this year with a new membership, The Contract Collective! The online landscape is constantly changing, which can be overwhelming for creators. This membership will provide legal resources to help online creators and entrepreneurs protect their businesses no matter how the industry, their business, or the law changes.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m more of a home body these days, and love to have friends over for good food, conversations, and wine. If we did go out, we’d check out a concert at 713 Music Hall, hit some bars in Midtown, and do some shopping at the Galleria. We may even swing by Tukey Leg Hut if the line isn’t too long lol.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Wesley, who has always been my biggest supporter and the strong foundation our family needs.
