We had the good fortune of connecting with Tuba Sapanli and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tuba, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After getting my MBA backed up with my business and psychology double degree, I started working for International Companies as a Business Development Manager. Wherever I worked, people always thought I was either a partner or owned that company, that’s just how I operated.

10 years later it was time for me to do “business development” for my own ideas. I started up 5 companies from scratch and succeeded in 3 of them. I couldn’t help it, even in the most unrelated conversations with anyone, I find myself telling the person how they can grow their business by using which tools, with X amount of budget and X amount of ROI.

I realized my true passion was to grow other businesses as well, not just my own, and decided to start a Growth Agency that aims to help startups get off the ground and use the unfair advantage they have to grow their business.

What should our readers know about your business?
20 years ago when people were still shaking hands in person, I traveled over 30 states to see what our clients were doing in their environment. My business development journey started with wearing a client’s shoes. To this day, my success depends on building empathy with real people whether it’s our clients or our team members and this is what is setting us apart.

When I started my brands, I was truly in the shoes of my current customers. I had to hire and fire 3 agencies because honestly they have been doing it as an agency for such a long time and they forgot to look from an entrepreneur’s point of view. And when you are just starting up, that is the only view you get.

It was not easy because I didn’t have a lot of money or investors who would back me up. I had to make money first if I wanted to advertise and to make money you have to advertise. Getting out of that vicious cycle was very hard to do and cost me a lot of money, inventory, and time while learning how to navigate in the online world. That experience taught me how to grow a business on a dime, organically, and understand what is needed to survive and thrive.

10 years ago, learning marketing online or finding someone knowledgeable was not as easy. I was so mad at the expensive web designer I hired, I rechanneled my anger towards learning and designed a stunning functional website myself. I then started taking courses on marketing, digital platforms, social media, and so on. 2 years ago, I started another e-commerce brand just to be able to understand the challenges of current online businesses so I can create real solutions for real sellers like me.

I wanted to provide all this knowledge that took me over 20 years to learn and develop to business owners who are going through it all especially within these last couple of bumpy years. So the idea of creating my growth agency, StrinX was born. I put together a team and opened 2 offices one in San Diego and one in Europe. My team has a collective of 40 years of experience in Marketing, Sales & Business Development both in North America and Europe.

Now our mission is to help companies with an unfair advantage to reach their true potential by guiding them through the complicated digital marketing world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
La Jolla and Coronado Beaches are my absolute favorites. I grab a blanket and a book every chance I get and spend time on either one of them. It’s also our family favorite because my kids and my husband (being the sailor himself) are crazy about the beach too.

We love Scoops in La Jolla to get coffee or ice cream. There is “Sultan Mediterranean Cuisine” in downtown San Diego, where we can have a delicious Turkish meal. I would certainly take them to Liberty Park or Balboa for all the museums to see.

What I love the most about San Diego is you don’t need much to be entertained. You can just do some rollerskating outdoors, take long walks on the beach and just enjoy a drink by the ocean and be happy. This is the main reason why we moved from the East Coast and we are so happy we did it.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My personal and business growth journey started with studying (not just reading) and applying the principles in the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey. I know this is sitting in many people’s libraries but I truly took in my heart the content of this book and started reading many others that helped me change from the inside and made me realize how much I wanted to become the best version of myself.

This led to attending seminars, taking many courses, coaching sessions that helped me rebuild my personal and professional life and find my true purpose.
