We had the good fortune of connecting with Carey Elizabeth Garneau and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carey Elizabeth, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Every decision you make in life has some sort of risk involved, whether that be pursuing a degree in Fine Art, moving across the country, quitting a well-paid full-time job in search of something more fulfilling or just riding my moped with a 50% chance of rain. Life without risk is boring – given the opportunity, I choose to gamble every time. I have been lucky enough in my life that many of the risks I have taken reaped reward. Not always the instant gratification we hope for, the reward for me has appeared as personal growth, professional relationships, memorable experiences, creative inspiration and new opportunities. I am thankful for where my art career is today and will continue on the road less traveled.

“If we consider games of chance immoral, then every pursuit of human industry is immoral; for there is not a single one that is not subject to chance, not one wherein you do not risk a loss for the chance of some gain.” – Thomas Jefferson “Thoughts on Lotteries.” 1826

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a first generation college graduate, I am proud of completing my Bachelor’s of Fine Art at the University of Connecticut. Since graduating, I have worked very hard to build my brand and portfolio while also working full-time at various jobs. I have learned that having a strong passion is not typical for everyone and I am thankful to have discovered and cultivated mine at an early age. Painting is my creative outlet, my self-care routine, my time to reflect, my way to inspire others and hopefully bring some positive energy into my clients homes. Currently, I am creating mostly abstract acrylic paintings on stained wood canvas but am always available for commissioned work.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite places to eat in North County are Banana Dang Coffee, Campfire and Nick’s on State. I would suggest walking around Carlsbad Village as there are many cute shops and a few galleries. Oak Gallery is great and Brandy, the owner, is very welcoming and hosts many fun events.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this Shoutout to the Carlsbad Village Foundry Artists who welcomed me into their family and continue to be a phenomenal support group. Specifically, Phyllis Swanson who has found us new opportunities and organized countless exhibitions. As a California transplant, I am grateful to have built relationships with this talented group of artists.
