We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Marquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking has been a pretty big factor in the way I’ve moved throughout my life. For me, taking risks is really just peeling back the “what if’s” and making them a reality. Good or bad, taking risks will teach you about loss, but it will teach you that sometimes a great risk will lead to a greater reward. Everything is somewhat risky, it can be as simple as starting a conversation with a person you don’t know. They may instantly reject you- or you may have just met your new best friend. But without that risk you’ll never know. In my career, risk taking has reached great heights. It was a risk for me to get into the corporate world at 19. It was a risk that ultimately I failed at because it didn’t make me happy, but I learned it wasn’t for me. It was always risky being a waitress, and balancing drinks on a tray hoping I didn’t drop them on anyone.. (this happened 3 times but who’s counting). It was a big risk for me to leave that world and then jump directly into entrepreneurship and become a real estate agent with no money or experience at 20.. I made some deals and learned about working for myself but it was such a risk financially to stay afloat when starting that it lead me to getting a “safer job” and using my real estate license to work in property management instead. I went from choosing the days I worked to working morning til night- 5 days, 40+ hours a week. I no longer had control over my time and wasn’t allowed to sell homes either working there. So ironically, the ”less risky” business I entered, became the scariest to me. Playing it safe made me feel small. I learned over time that taking risks makes me like I’m actually experiencing life and not just watching it pass me by. The pandemic blessed me with deep introspection that made me realize that I’m ready for a new risk- and that is to enter into the aesthetics industry as my own boss. Risking the stability of the leasing consultant world to make people look and feel amazing on my own time will come with a couple losses, but a lot more to gain creatively and for my happiness in the long run. In the beginning of anything you start, it’s always hard and time consuming; but having creative freedom and being my own boss is way more rewarding to me. The biggest risk I was living was wasting time in fields that didn’t fulfill me. The risk I have now is starting over and trusting that me being authentic to who I am will be enough to take me farther than playing it safe ever could.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m beginning my own lash and other beauty services business. Eyelash extensions, will be my starting point, I want to continue to offer more beauty services. I’ve also recently partnered with my boyfriend for his clothing line; Zoo Krueger where I model the clothing and manage shopping & inventory and other operations. It’s fun to model his designs and be versatile with every look. It’s really expanded my outlook on being an owner.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since this is San Diego Voyager, I definitely recommend PIZZA BELLA! Located in Old Town San Diego, fresh cheesy pizza, and really cute outdoor dining. Also make sure to visit Sunset Cliffs not too far from Pizza Bella. It’s a beautiful view and a really nice place to walk by the water. There are caves to explore as well. Perfect for a getaway!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A special shoutout to my boyfriend, Anthony, who always uplifts me and encourages my ideas. He really believes in me and challenges me to bring those ideas to life. Another shoutout to my photographer friends; Ryan Kynard, Robert Geason, and Kevin Afable for being the first ones to give me my initial boosts of confidence by allowing me to express myself through photos and music. And last but not least, Kacey Tovar and Willie Valentine for your motivation, and. constantly being positive sources of support and genuine friendship.
