Meet Briana Bauman | Artistand Art Teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Briana Bauman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Briana, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always had a very active imagination and since childhood I’d use anything I could get my hands on to create. For me it’s always been an outlet for my energy and really helps me focus my mind. I’ve been selling my art here and there online since i was a teen. That’s why when I got the opportunity to start my own business I went for it. As I met people coming to my studio wishing they could also learn to use the various materials I’ve become passionate about, it became a natural extension to start teaching classes, often catering to whatever the student wants to learn or project they are struggling with working on. That has been a really fun part of being an artist, becoming a teacher.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing I love about art is how unique each piece can be and how many materials you can use to make art so I’m always trying something new. This creates a challenge as most artists find success by having a signature type of piece they do. I also struggle quite a bit with social anxiety. Using a variety of mediums has helped create conversations and a sharing of ideas I would likely not have had otherwise. This has helped lead to my success in business and helped overcome a measure of my anxiety. It’s how I learned to offer sessions with people who need to have inspiration and a space to work plus the tools and materials in which to bring their project to life. I’ve been honored to help be a part of their process. Art collaboration is so rewarding.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We have such a great city for adventure! If we had a week to explore I feel I couldn’t let them go home without a trip to the Zoo and another day at the Wild Animal Park. It’s always a good time taking the ferry to Coronado and hanging out at the Ferry Landing Park. I always stock up on some oil and vinegar at the Coronado Tasting Room. Then a beautiful walk to the Del for sunset and ice cream or drinks. Of course a beach day in PB with a walk on the Boardwalk or OB and grab some coffee at Newbreak coffee and dinner at Wonderland Ocean Pub. It wouldn’t be right not to take them downtown where we can try a daring escape at The Escape Game San Diego on 5th and catch drinks at the speak easy Prohibition Lounge. Plus so many amazing places to eat. A day kayaking to the La Jolla Cave would be amazing on a nice day, maybe even a snorkel with the leopard sharks at La Jolla Shores then settle down for the evening with a pizza from Zia’s on Adam’s and a night in watching movies and playing board games. Then after sleeping in and enjoying some sunshine we couldn’t go wrong with our last evening at Shakespeare’s Pub and a show at the National Comedy Theatre.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My studio partner Alexis Evanoff is the one who encouraged me to join her and turn my art hobby into an art business. We approach art in very different ways which has made it really fun to collaborate and share ideas. She has been such an encouragement and support. My family has also been a huge support in my endeavors and there’s no way I could have kept going without them. The artist’s struggle is real!
