We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Wildman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
My end goal is similar to my starting goal. I want to be creating custom items and continue perfecting my carpentry skills. I would love to get to a place where I can have a shop outside of my home where I can be working on multiple projects at the same time without worrying about space. I would love to have a showroom where I can display custom pieces that clients can come look at to get inspiration or even buy my custom designs. I would love to be able to apprentice someone and help them learn the trade, similar to how I was able to learn from my own woodshop teacher in high school and from the carpenters from my first job at a custom cabinet shop. There are many steps in between now and where I want to be, but for now I am just enjoying creating custom pieces that my clients love.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a woodworker that specializes in creating custom pieces to fit in a clients home. I have been working with wood and building since I was in high school. Some of the pieces I am most proud of are the large custom vanities that have been built into the unique spaces that San Diego homes present. I have clients that have hired me to custom build numerous items in their homes as they have renovated different spaces. I started this work by building pieces for my family on the side while I was in management with a construction company. I knew I wanted to do this full time so two years ago I quit my day job to pursue my passions of custom woodworking. It hasn’t always been an easy road for my family and I, but with their support, I have found a way to make it work. I want any potential clients to know that I am very attentive to their needs and work hard to build pieces that they can be proud to show off.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have lived in San Diego my whole life. There are so many unique things that I love about this city. Of course, I would want to take anyone visiting to the beach where I spent most of my summers growing up. I am particularly fond of Ocean Beach and Sunset Cliffs. There is nothing compared to listening to the ocean waves while walking the Cliffs. I love finding new places to eat and drink. The Hills Local Pub in La Mesa where we currently live is a favorite spot my wife and I like to go. We always bring family and friends there for a bite and a drink. I did some work for Societe Brewing Company a couple of years ago and I enjoy getting a drink there as well. We have so many breweries and local eateries that it is hard to list all the places we would take visitors to.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my lovely wife. When I started my business she was worried about the financial part of the business. Would I make enough money? Would our bills get paid? It might have stressed her out more than it did me. But, she stuck with me and believed in me. That I am very thankful for.
