We had the good fortune of connecting with Brenna Olsen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brenna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started Chilly Child out of a need with my own children. I was frustrated one morning struggling with buttons and zippers on my baby’s outerwear when she was refusing to wear anything to keep her warm on a cold day. I thought, I wish there was just a blanket with holes in it I could throw over her head and go. After work that day I came home, cut some holes in a sheet and that was the day Chilly Child was born. I wanted to relieve a little of the day to day struggles that parents go through along with keep my baby happy, healthy and warm.
What should our readers know about your business?
I have been a creative entrepreneur for over a decade. I started my own graphic design business in 2009 and have pivoted through the years. I now own Cheap Restaurant Graphics, a graphic design firm that focuses on graphic design for the restaurant industry. It was through this background and love of design that I was able to create Chilly Child. I was able to design everything myself which helped with startup costs and I had the confidence of knowing I could run a business. There have been some definite peaks and valleys along the way. Covid-19 has thrown both of my businesses a real curve ball. CRG is trying to help as many restaurant clients stay afloat as possible during this difficult time and Chilly Child is leaning in to its ecommerce roots and relying heavily on online sales.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a Cardiff resident, I would definitely take them to our amazing beaches. My personal favorite spot is Cardiff Reef. I am a pretty low key person so I would probably cruise around Cardiff and hit up some of my favorite local spots like Bestawan, or Lost Abbey. If we were brunching, I would go to Breakfast Republic for Bennies and Bloodys. In the evening I would suggest Death by Tequila or if I was feeling really adventurous, I would head down to Little Italy for Cloak and Petal sushi and the Waterfront for late night drinks.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In addition to indulging all my crazy ideas, my husband has been instrumental in getting Chilly Child off the ground. He has really supported me throughout the entire process and believed in the idea. It is scary to start a new business and without that support I don’t know that I ever would have done it. He has also put up with all of our inventory taking over the house! Additionally the Cardiff 101 Mainstreet association has been really helpful and supportive!
