We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Ertman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
There are several reasons why we remain successful after being in business for ten years now. Obviously, there’s the simple stuff like providing good customer service, picking up the phone, quickly responding, etc… However, I think the most important factor behind our success is having a comprehensive knowledge of building science and construction. Since we have been involved in all phases of the building process, we hold ourselves to a higher standard. Our goal is to perform great home inspections, every single time.
One of the things I have always found concerning is that our industry doesn’t have the best training resources or a clear standard of care. There are far too many “certified” home inspectors working in California who have never been on a construction site. Some inspection associations have more stringent requirements than others, but the bar is still very low. Almost anyone can be a home inspector. To us, it doesn’t really matter what certification you have; what really matters is if you are truly qualified to do the job properly.
We run our business as more of a specialty operation. We have three team members, and each of us are equally qualified to inspect anything thrown our way. Many inspections are conducted with all three of us at one property. Our combined knowledge is really what gives us the cutting edge when comparing our services to others. This is a huge benefit to our clients, and results in them saving a ton of money.
When it really comes down to it, people want to know the true condition of what they are purchasing. Choosing the right inspector is extremely important.
What should our readers know about your business?
My father and I started Ertman Property Inspections in a North County garage. We both knew a bit about the industry, and wanted to provide a more useful inspection report than anyone was currently producing. It’s been ten years since the beginning, and we’re so proud to still be doing what we love every day. We live and breathe home inspections. I even dream about home inspections (yes… I know it’s weird).
We got to where we are today from being honest with our clients. Not all home inspections have good outcomes, so being honest is extremely important, especially when large amounts of money are on the line. Home inspections are typically performed under highly stressful conditions, sometimes with hostile sellers. There are always new challenges to overcome.
Overall, our experience has been very positive from the beginning. We are lucky to work with the best real estate professionals in Southern California, and we’re very thankful for their continued loyalty.
The future is very exciting right now. We have welcomed a new team member, and plan to expand our operations into new territories. We are always thinking of new ways to make our inspections the absolute best there can be.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love eating. Luckily, my job takes me everywhere and I got a good place to stop in just about every neighborhood.
My top contenders right now are definitely Mr. Peabodys Burgers & Ale for amazing bar food, Rocky’s Crown Pub for the best burger in town, Shakespeares Pub for fish and chips with Guinness, and of course Bario Dogg for the absolute best hot dog I’ve ever eaten.
It’s also not uncommon to see us at Vespa Motorsport on Pacific Highway. Good bunch of dudes.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We want to dedicate this shoutout to our wives. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding with all the late-night work!
Secondly, we want to give a very warm thank you to the staff at Mr. Peabodys Burgers & Ale on Friars Rd for always keeping our pitcher full.
