We had the good fortune of connecting with Billy NoJokes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Billy, what role has risk played in your life or career?
In my opinion I think taking risk is where you can get the biggest reward ….,just like how that old saying goes! Playing things conservative def has its place in the race, but actually taking a leap of faith every now and again can really help gain some traction! My 2018 release I named “Comfortably Uncomfortable” for this exact reason. I Myself as an artist, am pretty comfortable just making music in my studio and I’m not too excited about doing live performances.. In all actuality it kind of a stresses me out .. or should i say stressed me out? When i chose the name “Comfortably Uncomfortable” for my album that year, I wanted to live up to that name. I wanted to get comfortable in the situations that made me uncomfortable. I wanted to take all the risk and become a better performer, so I took every and any show I can get! To be honest it turned out to be a GREAT IDEA! Not only did I get much better at performing, but I also think it solidified my presence amongst the community of musicians in my genre. It also led me to sell way more records and merch than I ever thought I would. Opened my mind up to a whole bunch of new avenues and relationships that helped my progression. I’m really thankful I put my best foot forward and jumped. No Nike sponsor, but Just Do It!!!!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well I been making music for a really long time now, going on 20 years. I don’t think my talent is really in music but I do think my talent is more in my work ethic. I have a deep passion for music that gives me the drive to pursue this as a career. A long this 20 year road I ran into a lot of road blocks and obstacles. Instead of hanging things up I Just wear another hat or take on another role If I need to. Over the years I have learned a lot of different things to keep the ball rolling and the show going. Becoming self sufficient in your start to end processes really cuts the middle man wait time down. Most importantly I’m still learning and gaining experience growing my brand. hopefully one day i get big enough to out source some of the roles, but for the time being im getting a deeper understanding of what it takes to operate effectively.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well it really depends on the person. But some spots I always recommend are Balboa Park, the Self Realization Temple in Encinitas, Maybe the coves in La Jolla … def gunna hit up some breweries if they are into that. Also if the person isn’t familiar with this area. we are definitely going to hit up some Mexican food joints cuz good lord So Cal does it right!!! Possibly some in and out burger too!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
YES! Everybody whos ever spent a dollar on my album or merch. Any body who showed a genuine like for my music and gave me words of encouragement. I pour my heart out into everything I do and I’m a sucker for love when it comes to my music. Support goes a real long way in my book and that def keeps me pushing! Thank You!
