We had the good fortune of connecting with Athena Mathews and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Athena, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I fell in love with makeup and special effects when i was young. It was fun and messy and the creativity was endless. Through my 20s and 30s i thought i never had what it took too pursue my passion. Then one day i remember i thought to myself, you know if i never try ill never succeed. I took that first step and never looked back. Ive always loved making things, building props, drawing painting anything i could just for the love of it. To me its more important to love your career and make your life how you want it. Be who you truly are and do things you really love.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When im teaching my craft to my students at the end of the day im so proud! I see them take what ive taught them and create amazing and wonderful things, creatures. It makes me happy, deep down inside that i can help just one person pursue their dreams. On set i get to lend my talents to others in making their vision become reality. Its hard work. Messy, hot, cold so many things can happen on set, you have to be always ready to think on your feet. Its a creative dream to be apart of this amazing work.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My city, my home always in my heart San Diego. If i was to take a friend on a tour i think i would start with some of the best mexican food to grace our town the Hacienda in east county. So fun and very tasty. Then off to the embarcadero for a stroll by the water. To see all the ships. Out in the sun or under the stars. A perfect day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family deserves credit for standing with me in my pursuit to follow my dreams and passions.
