We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After spending 12 years working as a consultant engineer in the corporate world I knew I wanted to explore working for myself and creating something sustainable that I had control over, in particular I knew I wanted to create something that would allow me to work from home once we had children. I moved to the US in 2016 and soon after I undertook my 200hr Yoga Teacher Training while pregnant with our son, it was during this training that I knew the new direction of my work life would include yoga. After having our son in 2017 I was confronted with a very different type of stress than I had experienced in the corporate world. I found myself turning to yoga and my love of art as stress relief modalities in search of a calm mind. Seeing how having movement, meditation, mindfulness and creative practices in my life helped my stress levels, it has become my goal to bring the calming qualities of art, yoga, meditation and mindfulness to my community. My service offerings include online yoga, meditation and mindfulness resources, in person yoga and art classes and workshops, private bespoke workshops to suit your needs and a range of art and custom creations made mindfully with sustainable materials.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
There are really two sides to my art. Firstly, my personal creative practice in which I create fibre art using sustainable materials, always sourcing recycled materials where I can from other small businesses. My creative process is wild and unplanned, in complete opposition to the 12 years I spent in the technical and precise field of engineering. I draw inspiration from texture and form in nature and my materials, it is my chance to let go and truly follow my soul. The second part is in teaching, combining my process and logic driven brain with the creative and mindful art of macrame is a perfect marriage. I love bringing community together and seeing people leave my workshops so proud of what they were able to create in a couple of hours. My signature Meditation, Movement and Macrame workshops I am able to create an environment for slowing down, tuning in and calming the mind, body and soul. This is where my real vision comes to life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As someone who lives in North County I have to include some of my favourites up here. We love Valentinas on the 101 in Leucadia for a nice dinner out. Steel Mill coffee in Oceanside for a true local coffee fix, their cold brew is the best! I always drop in on my friend Elise at Gypsy Soul Dreaming for a browse through her eclectic store and can’t get past Captains Helm for a good thrift/vintage shop. Cruising down the 101 for all the best ocean views is a great way to see the SoCal way of life, making sure we stop at a quiet spot in Carlsbad for a swim. Once downtown Little Italy is on top of my list for places to eat with Ironside as a favourite for their oyster and champagne happy hour. The USS Midway is always on the itinerary too, being a military family this is one of our favourite family spots. And finally we love hiking so are always on the lookout for the next outdoor adventure and there are so many to choose from in San Diego!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Big shoutout to Katie Brauer. Katie was one of the leaders of the Yoga Teacher Training that I completed and continues to be a huge inspiration and mentor in my life. I am undertaking her Momentum program for yoga teachers and learning so much from her an her amazing community. Without Katie I don’t think I would have the direction in my business that I do now. Another shoutout has to go to my husband Santiago, he is always there to bounce ideas off, support all my wild ideas for the business and keep our son entertained while I blog on the computer in the evenings. Total MVP!
