We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Horn and Alexandra Dameron and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew and Alexandra, how do you think about risk?
We think about risk probably a little differently than most others. To us, the risk of NOT moving forward, NOT saying yes to yourself, and NOT jumping wholeheartedly into your life is a bigger risk than attempting something new.
If we hadn’t taken risks like changing jobs when we were already comfortable where we were, moving to California (in Alex’s case), taking positions with new/startup brands, etc., we wouldn’t have the success that we currently enjoy. Even our business now could have been considered “risky”. We bought an existing business while Covid19 was still creating lockdowns and staffing shortages, but it felt right, so we did it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets us and our business apart is our experience, and our connections in this industry. Andrew is not quite 40 years old and he still has over 20 years experience in the Pet Industry. Together, we bring knowledge and experience from just about every position you could imagine. Grooming, consumer facing positions, brand representatives and sales, leading sales teams and directing growth strategies, managing stores for others, and now, owning our own store and starting new brands. It wasn’t always easy, but we are driven by a passion for helping animals to live full, enriched, healthy lives and help their humans make better choices for them. It’s not something that can be replaced by technology and equity firms. This industry will always thrive on relationships and trust and welcome authentic and compassionate people to become more involved. We care deeply about our customers, their pets, our employees, and others that we encounter in this space. It is certainly a labor of love!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Harry’s Taco Club!!!
Ok, so aside from the best tacos around, definitely have to hit up Leilani’s for some legit Hawaiian plate lunch. We also love the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, its a cool way to spend an afternoon! While you’re in PB, grab some ice cream at Pacific Beach Ice Cream Company and take a walk down on the Crystal Pier. If you plan on coming out, try to get a hotel reservation at one of the cottages on the pier. They’re usually booked up 12-18 months in advance, so start looking early. Catch some waves with PB Surf School, and check out the sweet shops and bars while cruising the boardwalk too!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The people that took chances on us early on in our careers in the pet industry! They let us learn, and grow our skills to be able to really take charge now.
