We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Whitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allison, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I’m in the business of creating good design, which absolutely helps the community, but in a more subtle way than some other types of businesses. Every space we choose to spend time in impacts us, which is why thoughtful and purposeful design is so important. Nothing has a more immediate effect on our mood and well-being than our surroundings. Light, color, texture, sound – we may not be conscious of each individual element, but they all work simultaneously to affect our sense of being at any given moment. I got into design because of its power that excites and inspires me. Design is not only my profession, but it is my passion. In essence, I believe that great design not only has the ability to make our lives feel more beautiful, but also more peaceful, more organized, and more purposeful.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
DesignX Architecture + Interiors specializes in commercial interior design, custom furniture design and furniture selections/ procurement. We are very excited to soon launch our sister company, Handbuilt Furniture + Fixtures that specializes in custom furniture and fixtures as well! We believe in harnessing the power of interior design to create one of a kind spaces that transform how people feel, not just what they see! I started DesignX in 2015 after having my first child because I wanted to have control over my work schedule, and I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur. I think any business owner will tell you that learning how to run a business isn’t easy. I have a Bachelor of Architecture and a Masters of Interior Architecture, but neither prepared me for how to run a business! There are just so many things to know that I didn’t learn until I made mistakes, but you live and learn and become all the better for it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Let’s see…I would definitely hit up Ironside in Little Italy. I absolutely love the vibe, cocktails, seafood (and that amazing monkey bread)! I would take them on a walk through the quaint shops in La Jolla and get a peek at the sea lions and watch the sunset at Sunset Cliffs (preferably with a wonderful glass of vino). I would make sure to get in a dinner at Cesarina — it’s such an authentic Italian experience and the food is outstanding!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Adam, has always been my biggest supporter. He encouraged me to follow through to finish all 8 exams to get my architecture license at a time when it seemed impossible. Adam just seems to understand the mindset that it takes to successfully run a business, and most importantly how to always cover your butt! I’m fortunate that he keeps me in check and always provides encouragement.
