We had the good fortune of connecting with Ajane Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ajane, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I often felt voiceless growing up, my thoughts and feelings going unheard and unconsidered, I found my voice through art. It was a safe place at first; finding the truth behind the emotions I didn’t understand, a friend through all times, and garden I felt safe to grow in. When people noticed my art, they felt my poetry, they listened to me sing. I realized that a lot of what I went through and felt, I’m not alone in it. I want to continue create to connect in this world that seems as if we’re drifting apart.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My sound and work come from my own unique experiences. Each song and poem speaks for itself. The largest challenge in achieving my goals was learning how to be confident in myself. Most of what held me back was the fear of whether or not I could do it at all. I had to break the process down and learn as I went along. I’ve had friends and family expecting me to sign with a label, but I have such pride and passion in my music, frankly, I’m worried about being treated fairly and maintaining my freedom in my sound. I see too often artist I looked up to growing up celebrating leaving their contracts. I just never want to lose sight of my main focus of just enjoying what I create and connect with people along the way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love hiking but my favorite trail is the PQ Falls trail, which is the Los Penasquitos Canyon trail leading to this small, cute waterfall. Definitely would enjoy a night riding around Balboa Park on the scooters they provide. Im not a huge fan of Mission beach, but spending sometime at Belmont Park can be pretty fun. I was honestly surprised that the coaster was so much fun. Some of my favorite beaches are Torrey Pines, this cute spot called Sunset Seat, and Oceanside. I know Oceanside is a bit up there but the pier is so much fun, I recommend the ice cream down there, and they have rollerskating nights there. Definitely would have to go skating at Epic Rollertainment or SkateWorld too.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to first give a shoutout to my partner, Cam. He is always my number one support encourages me to show up as my true self no matter what. I may have given up without him believing in me on my low days. A shoutout to my family, they are the reason I have this love for music. And lastly, my creative writing teacher. I wpuld not have found a love for poetry or even become a published poet without her encouraging me to enter a poem into the community college poetry contest.
