We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Asher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adam, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk. This is something we all respond to differently. Some are averse to it. Others seek it. I probably fall somewhere in the middle. It’s not something I look for, but it never stops me from going after what I want. I’m not afraid to lay it all on the line. This has certainly paid off at times. And it’s also cost me. But looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. I believe the platforms I’ve built are making a positive impact in the world. And they would not exist had I been afraid to try.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make video documentaries and weekly podcasts that showcase inspiring humanitarian organizations and their efforts worldwide to care for those in desperate need. I do this because these people and these organizations inspire me. Because I admire the way they put others first. The way they treat people with dignity and care, people who might otherwise be overlooked or disregarded. I believe their work is valuable and that it should be honored.

We need to hear their stories, too, though. It’s important for our own well-being and perspective. We’ve been so overwhelmed by bad news for so long. We need to be reminded that there is still good in the world. And that we can be a part of it. My invitation on The Edge of Adventure and in Rugged Compass is for us all to go beyond status quo, to push past our own comfort zones, and to bravely move forward into life’s greatest adventure. A life of sacrificial service.

I’ve been working on all this for a while now. And in recent days, I’ve received some encouraging news regarding a few awards that my team and I have received. Most recently, The Edge of Adventure podcast was recognized with the Silver at The Anthem Awards, a very significant moment given the scope of the other award-winning brands and projects. So I suppose my advice would be this: If it’s worth doing, if it’s something you believe in, if it’s something that matters, don’t you ever stop.

Set your mind. Make it happen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego. An amazing part of the country. What should you do while here?

Grab a Padres game and sit where you can enjoy that breeze.

Spin through Old Town and get you some fresh-made tortillas.

Walk barefoot on the grass in La Jolla. Say hello to the seals. And then watch the sun set over some of the most unique waves you’ll ever see.

There’s a great live music venue up in Solana Beach, too, you should check out.

There’s so much to do and see here. But before you leave, drive over to Jamul where the desert rock formations boggle the mind. Find you a place to stay, and wake before dawn. You won’t want to miss the clouds that fell into the valleys while you slept.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many people have helped to make me who I am today. So many people have been there for me when I needed them. Family, friends, colleagues. At times even strangers. I think I’d give the credit for all that to the Lord. He has always sent me what I needed to keep going, to stay on the path.

Without a doubt, however, The Edge of Adventure and Rugged Compass both exist due to the inspirational efforts of humanitarians worldwide. I first encountered this type of work when I was a teenager traveling internationally. I went on these trips because I was intrigued by maps, culture and languages. But I soon discovered something much more powerful than even that. I discovered people who genuinely care for others, who refuse to turn a blind eye to great need and great potential.

Anything I do with the films, docuseries, podcast, and the mobile app is all driven by the inspiration I derive from the world’s most unsung heroes, those who serve others under difficult circumstances. Not for glory. But for love.
