We had the good fortune of connecting with Alfredo DiNunzio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alfredo, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had started several restaurants over the 40+ years since I moved from Italy to San Diego when I was 18. I’ve also run several other small businesses. But my heart has always been in the restaurant business. I attended culinary school years ago, and my wife and I have many recipes that have been passed down for generations.

Many ask me why I started a restaurant at my age. The reason is that I love to cook and I love when people enjoy my food

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My first job was at a barber shop and I learned to cook at a young age. Since moving to the US in 1974, I’ve run several different Italian restaurants and hair salons.

It was not easy moving to the US, when I only spoke Italian and didn’t know hardly anyone. And I learned alot. One thing was persistence, Some of my ventures succeed and some failed. But I learned to keep going. Another thing I learned is how important it is to treat everyone well, no matter who I come into contact with. I have had some amazing times and so many friendships. I never stop making friends, and treat everyone with respect, and a smile.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Little Italy, combining some of the best memories from my time growing up in Sicily and my time in San Diego. I’d introduce them to friends from all walks of life in the city and showcase many of the wonderful parks, beaches and restaurants that San Diego has to offer.

If we have more time, we would drive up the coast and stop along the way at some of the best wineries, concerts, and events in Southern California.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been married more than more than 43 years to my wonderful wife Rosanna. So my shoutout is to my wife and my children who are now grown up and all doing very well in life.
