We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Rob Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Rob, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
I had to develop a stronger mindset. I hired one of the best business strategy coaches out there with a specialty in spirituality. As I learned from her, I learned to let go of a lot of trauma. Its no coincidence that I broke $20k in a month shortly after.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After getting 20 media interviews, I realized that I had a flair for connecting with podcasters, journalists, reporters, etc and I liked helping small business owners get visible.

I created my own job. Honestly, NO ONE does visibility using the model I do. I founded a business magazine, taught myself how to do press releases and became the Director of Strategy at IQ Media. Brett Davis, a legendary San Diego radio host, became my mentor and friend.

In five short years, I created a hybrid of PR, digital marketing, publicist, and media coordinator.
I partnered with Marie Waite who runs the Finest Men in Real Estate Radio Show and Fire Up Connect Networking Group which helped my reach. She’s amazing.

I also partnered with the Business Bros Podcast and send them clients. Hernan and James are the nicest guys ever with a great show.

I had to try out a lot of tactics in the early days. I had to see what worked and what didn’t. Cause and effect were VERY important. For early stage business owners, DONT LET FAILURE DISCOURAGE YOU. You’ll need to test your systems while developing your network. When you find good people, create value for them and they will do the same.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Its not a San Diego trip without a cook it yourself steak at Turf Club. I would then plan a bay cruise on the Hornblower, and Sunday brunch at Inside Out restaurant. The eggs benedict alone is life changing.

Walking through Old Town and Balboa Park are a visual treat and for nightlife, HIGHLY recommend JT’s Tavern. Ask for Luke Mchale and you wont be disappointed.

Fun fact: You can pay for a day pass for the pool at the Lafayette Hotel on El Cajon Blvd. They have a full bar and kitchen.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jillian Sandoval completely changed my life. She showed me how to love who I was and saw my potential when no one else did.

Marshall Terrin, a former US Marine turned business developer, represents everything I want to be in business.

All the members of my Facebook Group, Success Odyssey with Dr. Rob. I honestly want to cry sometimes when I see how supportive they are. They are hand picked and we are a business family.

Brian Big Country Conwell – Army vet that lost a leg in an accident active duty and is now going to the Warrior Games for Team Army as a para athlete. I’m HONORED to work with him.
