We had the good fortune of connecting with Cecilia Hone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cecilia, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I actually can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t know I wanted to pursue music as my career. I have always been drawn to music and the creation process of it. At 7 years old I begged my parents to buy me a piano and ever since then I knew music was always going to be a major part of my life.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I grew up in the classical music world, competing in piano competitions throughout childhood and then earning my bachelors and masters degrees in piano performance. So for the most part I went the traditional scholastic route and considered pursuing a doctorate as well, but I also really wanted to work in other areas of music besides classical and knew more schooling wouldn’t allow me the time to do that. So a few years ago I decided to focus more on composing, arranging and music production. It has been an exciting journey which has lead me into areas of music I never imagined working in, such as producing with 808 Mafia in the hip-hop/rap industry. I think having a strong classical background has set me apart in the mainstream music industry. My understanding of musical literature, technique and theory definitely helps me be more creative and think outside the box (for better or worse!). I love mixing old with new and strongly believe the future of music is the synthesis of all musical styles.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My home base is currently in Utah, and I love being outdoors so I am typically hiking the mountains in the summer or snowboarding them in the winter! I also love latin dancing (salsa/bachata) so on a typical Thursday night you’ll find me at the local salsa club Southworth Hall. Whenever I’m in LA I always take advantage of the incredible salsa clubs like the Granada or Steven’s Steakhouse. And for sure I would take any visitor to my favorite sushi spot on the planet, Takashi in Salt Lake City!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of the best supports I’ve had entering into the music production field has been my friend, Josh Aker, who I met while still in college. We both studied music and he went on to make his career in composing and film/music production. We’ve remained close since college, even becoming neighbors and our children now attend elementary school together! Since I graduated with a performance and teaching degree, the music production side was unfamiliar territory to me. Josh essentially mentored me through the process, helping me learn the technology side of it and showing me how to set up the best music production studio to fit my needs.
