We had the good fortune of connecting with Justyne Greenlaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justyne, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
Growing up music has alays been a big part of my life. I have always loved being part of the art community since I was little. It all started when I took to the stage at a young age performing in musical theater productions, which led me to attend an arts school in high school for Dance, to where I then continued my career as a dance major at San Jose State University. Whenever I wan’t at school, working, or dancing – you could catch me at the nearest nightclub or festival living it up with my friends! I started DJ’ing within the last year or so, when COVID hit – the scene started to die down a bit, so I figured I’d bring the party to me! Also, I had always been intrigued and allured by performing, and dream of blessing the decks for a festival one day. Needless to say, though DJ’ing can be a prodominately male endevour, that factor never has, or ever will stop me from chasing what I love!

I feel extremely passionate towards music, house music especially. Music festivals, concerts, and raves are all spaces where I have always felt like I could be myself in. I have never met such a most welcoming and understanding community as those involved in the scene. My DJing journey has led me to meet people with the most kindest hearts, that I hope to inspire and touch through music. Whenever I would be at a festival, I looked up to all the artists who were on stage. I always had a feeling deep in my heart that that’s where I want to be one day — touching the souls of thousands of people through music.

Soon, I’ll be coming out with remixes, producing music, and hopefully one day – spinning at large festivals such as EDC or even Coachella. While I know I have a lot of years of work to put in, I’m looking forward to the journey!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Growing up, I didn’t always have the easiest of upbringings. I found myself going in and out of foster care all throughout middle school and high school. My mom was also diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer when I was young as well. I went through bouts of major depression, isolation, and overall rough experiences. On the other hand, going through all that I did has made me the strong woman I am today, a hard worker, a dreamer, and passionate towards the arts.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The entire Bay Area is known for its unique nightlife, coastal trails, and amazing food! Some of my favorite spots to grab lunch at are; Tacos El Patron in San Francisco has some of the most delicious Birria tacos I have ever had! I highly recommend grabbing lunch there, then heading out for a nice walk along the beach. If you’re feeling like getting your groove on mid-week, The Continental Bar & Lounge in San Jose features house music DJ’s Wednesday nights, plus they have an exquisite cocktail selection.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All my friends and family members have played a vital role in my DJ & performing career. Throughout my entire life, my mom (Rosemary Greenlaw), has always supported and nurtured my love for the arts. She always encouraged me to audition for shows, live performances, movies, etc. Without her, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I have numerous friends as well who have allowed me the space and opportunity to illustrate my love for music by performing at nightclubs, and who have encouraged me on my journey. I am truly blessed to have so many people in my life who believe in me.
