Meet K.Kerr | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with K.Kerr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi K.Kerr, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As an avid music listener, I started writing rhymes at the age of 13. Scared of what my peers would say, I shared very little and only rapped within my own thoughts. Once more comfortable in the Navy though, I would show my writings to coworkers and seek a reaction, whether good or bad. Their kind words of wisdom motivated me to continue pursuing music professionally, practicing my voice and delivery ever chance I got. This was the developmental stage of The Komodo Dragon, K.KERR.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I first stepped on the scene, an elementary school teacher was on the agenda, knowing my music and education would eventually conflict if I was to prosper on a much larger scale. After graduating from SDSU, I worked among Veterans and grew a bond within the community. For the first time on the clock, I felt rewarded for my accomplishments, similar to music. I have spent eight years in higher education and continue to provide my services to those in need.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
SoCal provides some of the most unique and flavorful dishes, so any of the 24hr taco shops around the area would be my first destination especially if new to the West Coast. After some grub, a peaceful stroll along the boardwalk of Pacific Beach to take in the views and observe beautiful people would not only be eventful, but good for the waistline as well. If the weather doesn’t permit though, craft beers at one of the numerous breweries San Diego has to offer, such as Ballast Point or Stone, would do the trick. To end the night, Gaslamp offers clubs to boogie in your flyest ensemble or if more low-key, North Park has great dive bars. Before calling it a night, don’t forget the bacon wrapped hotdog with everything on it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My engineer, Jay Wat, is a key piece of my success. I was going to a much more expensive studio prior, with little to no guidance, waisting money on vocals that would never see the light of day. After collaborating with San Diego’s very own, Skanless Joe, he witnessed overdrive and determination from within the booth, so pointed me in the right direction and the rest is history.
