We had the good fortune of connecting with Alli Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alli, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Shortly before I started my own digital marketing agency, I was working full time as the Director of Administration for an IT company. The role left me feeling unfulfilled and uninspired. I started up my food blog in October 2019 and 10 days later I as laid off of my job, which was an industry I worked in for over 10 years. I had other full time offers but decided it was best for me to be own my own boss – as risky as it was – which allowed me to spend more time with my two young children. Although it was totally foreign to become a full time food blogger and digital marketer, it also felt SO amazing. I loved being creative as well as managing my own time. I also really enjoy cooking so that was such a nice change of pace from the stressful world of managed IT services. There were many times I didn’t think I was making the right decision because there is a huge risk in starting your starting your own business, let alone switching industries at 39 years years old. But it always felt so right and seeing how happy it made my kids, I knew I made the right decision. Today I have grown my following to almost 10,ooo followers in 2 years and I have no regrets about the risk I took by leaving the IT industry and starting my own business.
What should our readers know about your business?
I own a digital marketing marketing agency – Plethora LG. The LG stands for lead generation because that is my specialty. After working in managed IT services for 12 years, which is one of the hardest industries to generate leads for, I understand how to help direct new business to organization’s who need help with marketing. Although I know the IT industry best, over the last two years I have built up in intimate understanding of food and how to market it through social media. Not only do I understand how to leverage social media to market your business, I am well versed in cooking and photographing food, baked goods and drinks. If you are struggling with how to market your food related business on social media, we definitely should have a conversation. And if you are struggling to market your non food related business on social media, we should have a conversation. No matter what your need may be, I’m sure I can help.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I love fried chicken so the Chicken Shop in Santee would be first on the list. Then the Crack Shack because they have a fun menu with tons of variations on classic fried chicken. Next would be The Venetian in Point Loma for some of the best Italian food ever! My husband and I used to live in Point Loma before we had kids and went there weekly. For date nights we go to Oaks Tavern and Kitchen because we love their food and they have non-alcoholic beer for my hubby who does not drink. And when it’s time for Mexican (my favorite) we like Ferny’s in Santee. But El Indio downtown catered our wedding and will have have a special place in our hearts. We also LOVE hibachi and Okawa in Santee is another favorite of ours.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without two people – my sister Lauren and my best friend, Mandy. Since day 1 of this blog they have both served as my creative directors and have helped to facilitate the growing number of sponsorships I have. Every time I need help deciding between photos to post for sponsorships or just a recipe, they always give their unbiased opinion. They support me and always help encourage me in what I’m doing. It’s nice to know that the people you care about will give you their honest opinion and Lauren and Mandy ALWAYS do that. If I didn’t have them, my content wouldn’t be what it is and I cant begin to to=ell you how much their opinion means to me.
