We had the good fortune of connecting with Theresa Vandenberg Donche and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Theresa, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
I really never see my career as an artist to end if I don’t have to. The beauty of painting and being creative is its ageless. Having said that goals I would like to achieve center around personal challenges as an artist. Taking my art beyond what I am doing today. Painting and sculpting pure honest expression, something that is quite frankly very hard to do. As far as my teaching I am working on doing destination workshops in other countries as well as the USA.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Started out as a graphic designer, running my own company with my husband, ultimately I ventured toward painting. Though out the years I’ve shown and sold my work to private collectors as well as corporations have added my art to their collections. My work is intuitive and gestural, a reactive and physical approach. Being a high energy person this form of abstract painting reflects who I am creatively. I also teach this form of painting in workshops around southern California. Currently I am finnishing a body of work that will be shown at the Oceanside Museum of Art with my artist group TWA. The show opens in March 2021.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would start out with a morning walk on Coronado beach, grab a coffee at Nado Gelato Cafe then off to Cabrillo Monument for an incredible view of the city. Lunch in Liberty Station at the Public Market. After lunch a walk to Stone brewery for a nice cold beer. That evening would be a play at the Old Globe and finish off with a cocktail at Mr. A’s and its spectacular views.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For many years I painted under Reed Cardwell, an artist from Southern California, his influence on me as well as others was immense, he will be greatly missed. My artist group TWA is a constant source of inspiration as well as my artists friends who are always there to support me.
