We had the good fortune of connecting with Sigrid Rijckoort and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sigrid, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I started my travel blog Roadtrippers of the Sun after my first journey abroad as an adult. I loved traveling and wanted to share my stories with my friends and family, just for fun. After the first trip, my boyfriend and I started traveling more and wanted to give tips about finding the cheapest tickets, sleeping in hotels without having to pay full amount and of course share our journey abroad. Our readers and followers were growing at that time. At first it didn’t come to mind to start a business out of it. But after a 3 month trip to Mexico and the US, with several collaborations, we felt ready enough to ‘jump into the unknown’. We purchased professional photography gear and learned everything about photography and editing. After a while we considered ourselves “good enough” to ask (more) money for our services such as influencer marketing, sponsored blogposts and content marketing. We also added our presets (photo filters) and our vegan clothing line to have a more stable income. Now we travel the world without having to worry about money.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a content creator, a travel blogger to be specific. My job is to create images for brands and/or create brand awareness for businesses in the travel industry. I always go the extra mile. I am not easily satisfied and that is what sets me apart from others. Our images are high quality because we prefer to work with the best gear possible. As a content creator, you have to deal to face a lot of competitors. For me, the hardest part was to not bring myself down every time I saw someone else do better than me. I have grown so much the last two years, and I am proud of myself, but I am not yet where I want to be. It feels like it’s never good enough. Although there are many people who are inspired by our work. I am still learning to let other people’s opinion not ‘influence’ me. It’s important to get feedback, but it may not define you as a person.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am not from San Diego myself, so I am not familiar enough with the neighborhood. But I would definitely advise my friends to go see a baseball fame at Petco Park. We had the absolute best time watching the San Diego Padres win the game against San Francisco in 2018. It’s an experience I’ll never forget. Besides baseball, we would suggest to go to the San Diego Zoo if you have children or just love to watch animals. And a visit to the stunning Balboa Park can not be missed.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people I want to thank. People that have inspired me to take the risk, to go for my dreams, are my boyfriend Bryan and a lot of content creators on Instagram. For example @aggie and @pilotmadeleine. They were the two first people I followed on Instagram and they inspired me ever since. I also love the information that Nina from Sidewalker Daily gives to her audience. I learned a lot from her as well.
