Meet Kara Horat | Founder, Connect For Success Mastermind

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kara Horat and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kara, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My perspective on work/life balance has changed dramatically over the years.
Early in my entrepreneurial journey, I thought balance meant dividing my time equally between work and life. The reality is, when you’re building a business, especially in the beginning, balance often isn’t realistic. There were seasons when my business required more of me and seasons when my family did.
Today, I think of balance less as a perfect scale and more as alignment. I pay attention to whether I’m investing my time and energy in the things that matter most during a particular season.
I’ve been an entrepreneur for nearly 30 years, built multiple successful businesses, raised a family, cared for aging parents, and navigated life’s unexpected challenges. What I’ve learned is that balance isn’t something you achieve once and keep forever. It’s something you continually adjust.
I also believe success shouldn’t come at the expense of your health, relationships, or well-being. Over time, I’ve become much more intentional about protecting my calendar, prioritizing meaningful work, creating space for family and friendships, and making time for things that recharge me.
For me, work and life aren’t really separate. I love what I do. The key is making sure my business supports the life I want to live rather than the other way arou

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
If there’s one thing I’d want people to know about me and my brand, it’s that I’m passionate about helping entrepreneurs avoid building their businesses in a vacuum. Over the years, I’ve watched incredibly capable people question whether they should keep going, get stuck on decisions, lose momentum, and miss opportunities—not because they lacked talent, ideas, or determination, but because they were isolated in their thinking.
That’s what led me to begin speaking about a term I dubbed Entrepreneur Isolation Syndrome. My initiative is to help break that cycle by creating opportunities for entrepreneurs to gain perspective, exchange ideas, challenge assumptions, explore possibilities, and learn from the experiences of others.
I’ve always believed that what you don’t know, you don’t know. Sometimes one conversation, one question, one insight, or one introduction can change the trajectory of a business. When entrepreneurs have access to the right people and the right perspectives, they make better decisions, move faster, and create results they may not have achieved on their own.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend actually does visit, so I don’t have to imagine this one!
We’re not the type to create a packed itinerary. We tend to “beep bop” around and simply enjoy spending time together.
One of our favorite things to do is hike anywhere with an ocean view. Two of our favorite spots are Torrey Pines and Cabrillo Monument. The views never get old.
A mandatory stop is Seaside Market to pick up a big slab of their famous Cardiff Crack. My husband grills it up, and we enjoy it with my homemade Caesar salad. It’s become a tradition.
We’ve also hopped aboard the Old Town Trolley so she could see all the different parts of San Diego. And if we’re looking for a perfect evening, you’ll find us watching the sunset from the deck at Hotel del Coronado.
My dog Natasha always gets some attention too. We take her to Cardiff State Beach, affectionately known in our house as “Tata’s Beach,” and then head over to Las Olas Mexican Restaurant for Mexican food and margaritas.
But honestly, the places aren’t what make the trip special. The best part is simply spending time together. We talk, catch up, explore a little, laugh a lot, and then laugh some more. After all these years, that’s still my favorite way to spend a week with one of my favorite people.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people I could mention because I truly believe none of us succeeds alone.
First and foremost, my mom deserves a tremendous amount of credit. She raised me as a single mom and taught me lessons that have stayed with me my entire life. I watched her work hard, figure things out, keep going when things weren’t easy, and do whatever it took to provide for our family. Long before I became an entrepreneur, she was teaching me resilience, resourcefulness, determination, and personal responsibility through her example.
My husband Larry also deserves a tremendous amount of credit. We’ve been married for nearly 30 years, and he’s supported me through every version of my entrepreneurial journey. There were years when business was thriving and years when it was incredibly challenging, and he has been by my side through all of it.
I’d also give a shoutout to the thousands of people I’ve met throughout my career. Every mentor, client, referral partner, mastermind member, and friend has contributed something to my journey. One of the greatest gifts of being in business for nearly 30 years is realizing how much we learn from each other.
If there’s a common thread in my story, it’s that relationships matter. None of us gets where we’re going alone. My success has been built on the encouragement, support, wisdom, opportunities, and belief of so many people along the way, and I’m grateful for every one of them.
