Meet James Morgan | Guitarist-Composer-Producer-Marketing Ambassador-Recording and Performance Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with James Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Ultimately, my career and brand has been shaped by having a clear direction, staying consistent even when it’s difficult, and understanding that music thrives at the intersection of creativity, discipline, and collaboration. When you treat your art like a business—and your business with heart—the results follow.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art lives at the intersection of melody, inspiration, groove, and experience. As a guitarist, composer, and bandleader, and now add CEO of my own record label, JMJ Records to this list, my goal has always been to create music that feels good, is beautiful and connects with the listener, emotionally and soulfully, and elevates the vibe, ambiance and atmosphere—whether that’s in a concert hall, club venue, restaurant or corporate or private event, or even through someone’s headphones. What sets me apart form other musicians and composers, is that I don’t view music solely as self-expression; I view it as an experience that’s meant to enhance people’s lives. This personal and professional perspective, has shaped everything from how I write and produce to how I brand, and market my work.
I’m especially proud of the evolution from my years with the Ghost Jazz Trio, to the fully realized James Morgan Jazz band of today. That transition wasn’t just a name change—it was a commitment to more clarity, growth, and vision as I continue to grow as an artist and promoter of my music. My 2023 debut album “Groovin’ Smooth” on Guitar One Records, was recorded under the Ghost Jazz Trio brand, which was part of a carefully planned and coordinated transition to establish the new brand, James Morgan Jazz, in regards to personnel and direction. It was the transitional album to established the sound and identity of the new brand, that has gone on to earn strong industry recognition and support, setting the stage for a continued success. From there, releases like “Live Love” and “Frequency of Love” further established the new brand and music in the marketplace. Having the single, “Frequency of Love” finish the 2025 year at #1 on the Top 30 Jazz Charts, was incredibly meaningful, because it validated years of persistence, strategic thinking, and relationship-building within the jazz, smooth jazz, as well as the musician and radio communities.
Professionally, getting to where I am today was anything but easy. Like most modern musicians, I’m an independent artist—handling my own marketing, funding my projects, building relationships, and often working without immediate financial return. The challenges were and are real: limited resources, industry gatekeeping, and the constant pressure to stay visible and viable in an ever changing music landscape. I have and will continue to overcome these challenges through self-belief, a strong vision of what I want, and consistency, to achieve that clear vision. I believed my music was marketable and that it added real value to venues and events, and I never wavered from that belief—even when progress is slow.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that consistency beats talent, when talent isn’t consistently visible. I treat marketing as a daily discipline—engaging on social media, communicating with radio DJs and programmers, other musicians and ensuring my music stays present and relevant. Repetition truly is the mother of success. Visibility compounds over time, and staying engaged keeps the brand alive.
I also strongly align with business principles, particularly as they apply to music as a business. Clarity of vision is everything—you have to know exactly where you’re going. Massive, consistent action matters more than motivation. And proximity is power—working with the right collaborators, businesses, and mentors accelerates growth. Success in music is never a solo effort.
I owe a tremendous amount of my journey to those who believed in me and my vision as a bandleader. Especially those that have performed, recorded and collaborated with me these last 5 years, like bassists Nathan Brown, Lance Jeppesen, Hadrien Feraud, drummers Jack Nathan, Tres Hodgens, pianist Chase Pado, and of course the late great guitarist Dean Brown. Dean was a mentor and a true collaborator on Groovin’ Smooth, serving as a co-composer, co-producer, and co-guitarist. His guidance, musical brilliance, and unwavering belief in me, gave me the confidence to fully step into my own sound, voice and vision, to tell a story with every song, live or recorded. His influence continues to shape my musical approach to composing and my approach to artistry.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is simple: this is music with intention. James Morgan Jazz is built on authenticity, discipline, collaboration, and heart. I believe music thrives when creativity meets strategy, and when passion is supported by consistency. My story is proof that with a clear direction, the right people around you, and relentless belief in yourself, it’s possible to build something meaningful—even in an ever-changing industry.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe a great deal of my journey to the people who believed in me early and consistently, and first and foremost, I want to dedicate this shoutout to the late, great guitarist Dean Brown. Dean was not only a mentor and friend, but a true collaborator on my debut album, Groovin’ Smooth, serving as co-composer, co-producer, and played guitar on all the songs. His guidance, musical brilliance, and unwavering support gave me the confidence to step fully into my own sound and vision from that point on. Dean’s belief in me opened doors to opportunities that continue to shape my career today, and his influence remains a permanent part of my musical DNA.
I also want to recognize the wider community of musicians, radio DJs, programmers, and industry professionals who have and are currently supportive of my music by their contributions, which has helped elevate the James Morgan Jazz brand (formerly Ghost Jazz Trio), to new heights. Their encouragement and collaboration reinforce the truth that success in music is never a solo effort—it’s built through relationships, trust, and shared passion. It takes a village.
