Meet Tim Butler | Owner/Press Operator at Quality Letterpress

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Butler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had been a touring musician for years; the only other thing I knew how to do was run letterpresses While there are letterpress shops in San Diego, I decided to focus the business on small, custom work for artists and designers. Having my own business also allows me the opportunity to set my own hours and still travel for music gigs as I want.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I try to separate myself from the other letterpress shops in San Diego by being able to do small, detailed work. Done mostly by hand, one sheet at a time. I was fortunate to learn the craft from people who had dedicated themselves to this type of printing from an early age. This trade often required a 2-year apprenticeship before you even worked on a press. I’ve learned patience with the presses, as well as with the clients. One thing that took a few years to overcome was the concept that I was solely responsible for every decision. From client meetings to press work, and all of the paperwork it takes to run a business.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I will always take a visitor to Balboa Park; the architecture and museums never fail to impress. A walk in Mission Trail Park is on the list, as well as taking the dogs to the beach. Perhaps an afternoon going through North and South Park to visit shops, and where you’ll always find tasty food along the way!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My clients make the shop what it is. I am fortunate to work with creative and talented people. Valentine Viannay, Whimsique Invitations, Wendy Ware Calligraphy, BPI and a host of others.
