We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Alcobia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
The work life balance is tough to manage. I’m very motivated and focused on my business succeeding, so I dedicate as much time as necessary to have positive results. At the end of the day it’s up to me to make it happen! Initially I worked day and night establishing the business. There were a lot of sacrifices and it wasn’t great for spending time with my kids. Since then I have developed a lot of systems and automated parts of the business so that I could free up more time to dedicate to my family. I’m still trying to find that perfect work life balance, It’s tough. Being in the entertainment industry definitely has perks such as being able to travel for work and take my family with me, so that allows us some little getaways throughout the year to check out places we haven’t been before. I also do a lot of family friendly concerts and events so I can take my family to those as well and they have fun. The struggle is getting days off. I’m really busy, which is great, so taking time off takes a lot of planning. So the work life balance is still something I am working on really ‘balancing’ better.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Noize Cartel Records is dedicated to helping artists succeed in the music industry independently. We give them the information and resources to release music at the level as a major label, however we want our artists to own the rights to their music, it’s a lifelong asset for them, so our digital distribution channels are equivalent to the major labels worldwide, and the artists still own their music. I’m most proud of the quality of artists that we have working with Noize Cartel Records. They are all highly skilled industry professionals, and they are some of the most kind hearted people I’ve met in my life. They are supportive of one another, and work together to grow in the music scene. Because of that, we have artists who have achieved top 100 releases, been nominated for music awards, and gained a lot of media exposure. Getting to where I am today professionally has taken years of hard work and dedication, as well as a desire to make it happen. Noize Cartel Records is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year. In such a creative technology focused industry, there’s so much that changes and becomes relevant as well as irrelevant. It’s a constant challenge to keep up with it all and implement new strategies. Really just have to make it happen or you can get left behind. I’ve learnt it’s really important to learn as much about these new technologies so you can make the most of them and use them in creative ways. The best thing I can say to people out there is
Be positive, dedicated, and love what you do. Be true to yourself. Nothing is easy, be ready to do the work, and do it well. Exceed expectations. Strive to achieve your goals and persevere, there’s always a way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So many fun things to do when visiting the areas around San Diego, California. Most importantly check out some live music and the events always happening around the area. I have been spending a lot time in Mexico, there’s so much culture, awesome entertainment and such good food. It’s an easy walk across the boarder, visit Rosarito and Bombay Beach Club for a fun experience! San Diego has a lot of fun things to do such as museums at Balboa Park, as well as the waterfront downtown San Diego. Check out some world class jazz Sundays at Tio Leo’s lounge on Napa St. They also have award winning bands weekly Tuesday through Saturday, it was recently voted as the best dance venue in San Diego. Take a swing dance lesson from the award winning Mercedes Moore and have some fun on the dance floor. Don’t forget to go for a nice walk on the boardwalk in Pacific Beach, and top if off with a new tattoo from Garrett Newby at Pacific Beach Tattoo studio, we love those guys!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who have helped the success of my business, they deserve so much more than a shoutout as I appreciate them so much. I thank God and my family for the support and motivation. Not a lot of people consider a career in the music industry a ‘real job’ so the fact that some of my family has encouraged my desire to work and succeed in the industry really helps my strength of mind to make it happen. Alongside them, music consumers who appreciate good quality music and entertainment. Without all of them the industry would cease to exist. Please continue supporting independent music, artists, and live music venues! Also important to shoutout are the people who help us get our music and entertainment out publicly worldwide such as Ash Gay and the crew at Xelon Entertainment, and you all at Shoutout SD and publications that help the business world and people grow and learn more about each other, we are so appreciative for that and what you do, thank you! One special shoutout to my good friend and world renowned studio engineer Jeff Forrest, he’s beginning his retirement and he’s been a big part in helping us deliver quality music to the world!
