Meet Cole King | Hairstylist & Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cole King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cole, what principle do you value most?
The value that matters most to me is learning new things. As a hairdresser, I not only take pride in my craft but also in the role I play as a mentor—especially to my daughter, who has followed in my footsteps. Being a good example is crucial to me; I strive to embody the qualities I want to instill in my mentees, such as integrity, creativity, and continuous improvement.
I believe that being a lifelong learner is essential in our industry, as trends and techniques are always evolving. By staying curious and open to new ideas, I can better educate my clients and students, ensuring they receive the best experiences and guidance possible.
Moreover, adaptability is another principle I hold dear. In the world of hairdressing, we often face unexpected challenges, whether it’s a last-minute client request or a new trend that requires quick mastery. Embracing change and being flexible allows me to navigate these situations effectively while also encouraging those I mentor to do the same.
Ultimately, I aim to create a positivity, and inspiration wherever I go

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After art school
My journey in hairdressing began somewhat unexpectedly. Initially, my ambition was to major in environmental design, and hairdressing was simply a way to support myself through college. However, along the way, I discovered a deep passion for this craft. I was fortunate enough to have an incredible mentor, Linda Moulios, who not only educated me in fashion but also instilled in me a love for teaching and the importance of mentorship.
As a single mom early in my career, hairdressing offered me the flexibility I needed. It became more than just a job; it provided me with a creative outlet and a supportive family environment. The challenges I faced, particularly balancing work and motherhood, taught me the importance of adaptability. I learned that those who adapt quickly to change and embrace new challenges are the ones who truly thrive.
What excites me most about my art is how it allows for personal expression and connection with clients. I want the world to know that my brand is built on a foundation of eager service and a commitment to learning. I believe in the power of collaboration and have dedicated myself to mentoring others, just as I was mentored. My story is about growth, resilience, and the joy of creating beauty while building a community around it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my best friend, a talented hairdresser, visits San Diego, I would curate an unforgettable experience that showcases the city’s vibrant culture and lifestyle.
First, I’d recommend a night out at The Casbah, one of San Diego’s iconic venues for independent music. It’s a place where you can discover up-and-coming artists and enjoy the atmosphere of a true local gem.
For a delightful dining experience, we would head to Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill. Known for its fresh catches and laid-back vibe, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious dinner while soaking in the coastal influence of San Diego.
Of course, no visit would be complete without a stroll through Balboa Park, with its stunning gardens and rich history. The San Diego Zoo is also a must-see, offering an incredible chance to explore wildlife in a beautiful setting.
I would suggest staying at the Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows. It combines retro charm with modern amenities and is close to many attractions, creating the perfect home base for the trip.
Lastly, I’d try to fit in a class with local talents like Mike Varela, DJ Muldoon, or Anthony Edge. This could be a fun opportunity for my friend to learn new techniques and gain inspiration from the creative vibe of San Diego.
Overall, it would be a blend of music, food, culture, and hands-on experiences that perfectly captures the essence of San Diego.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a huge shout out to the incredible Nick Arrojo for being an amazing mentor in my journey as a hairdresser! Thank you for believing in both me and my daughter, Sasha, and giving us the opportunity to participate in your hair show EXPO in New York. It was a dream come true for us!
Sasha, you were the perfect partner in crime, and I’m so proud of everything you’ve accomplished. Your talent and dedication inspire me every day! Together, we’ve learned and grown so much, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us both!
