We had the good fortune of connecting with Billy Bernal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Billy, why did you pursue a creative career?
I felt like as a kid I was trained to do well in school, go to college and get a degree and I had to do something to be a productive adult. I did the normal 9-5 day job working in Hospital Administration and day in/day out it became quite jarring everything became so routine and cookie cutter and by nature I was quite the creative. I grew up not being very athletic unlike the rest of my family, they killed it. I gravitated towards the dramatic arts and dancing. I had always had an affinity towards drawing as my grandfather was a painter by trade. As I grew up I would draw here and there and I love group projects at school that would require huddling together and creating the package we wanted to present. I think like most of the world 2020 really forced everyone to slow down and rethink their lives and what was important. For myself I didn’t want to go back to a job that was going to make me turn into a zombie the moment 9:00am hit. But living in San Diego I couldn’t exactly quit a job and start my own business. I took the time to learn my craft starting my Permanent Makeup Career with Microblading and slowly picked up more PMU skills as the years progressed Ombré, Lip Blush, Color Corrections as well as Scar Camouflage. Once I felt like my business was baring a heavier work load than my 9-5 I quit and started my career as BILLY BROWS.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
By trade I am known as a PMU which is short for Permanent Makeup Artist. In hindsight a cosmetic tattoo artist, I help enhance your natural features via a blade or tattoo machine. Sounds scary but products these days are made a lot more natural for your skin so you don’t have to worry about the work ever looking like a tattoo. I think what sets me apart from a lot of artist is that I really take the time during the consultation to discuss what the client is overall looking for. I think this is more important than the actual work, being completely on the same page with your client is key because at the end of the day they are paying for something that is technically “Permanent” on there face. Permanent being used very loosely all PMU services are made to be Semi-Permanent in that you have the longevity of a year to a year and a half in which the work will eventually fade away. A good indication that you got your work done with Tattoo Ink and not PMU Pigment is that the work has faded to either a cool ashy tone such as blue, grey, green or sometimes even purple. I explain this in great depth to assure my clients that what they are paying for is quality. I think this is what makes me most proud I want my clients to have an amazing experience from start to finish. I would like people to know that I put a lot of love into my craft, everything I have created with my brand has been 100% a testament of what lives in my brain the experience, the work, the little aftercare kits have all been crafted with a lot of thought and love.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First and foremost my best friend and I are very much in our “Treat yourself Era” and living in San Diego we would most definitely have the best time. I think It would start with a late night arrival at the airport followed by some really good Mexican food from the local taco shop and then catching up here at home with lots of laughs and fun. We would then sleep in because in my fantasy we both worked a long week and needed to catch up on some Z’s we would then hit up the local farmers market with my dogs and we would get some locally sourced goodies and either a coffee or smoothie. We would then proceed to a midday lunch and hit up one of my favorite local open airs spots INSIDEout for some yummy cocktails and a great bite. After eating way to much good food we would probably opt for going home and relaxing for a bit while so we can recharge and get read for a night out on the town. Depending on how we felt we would either go to a nice dinner or even hit up a local rooftop and just enjoy each other’s company, reminisce of where we’ve been in life and where we are now. I think quality time, good food, gorgeous scenery is my ideal view on what the perfect Bestie weekend would be.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my success to my partner Andrian. He has been my rock through the months that have been slow and my cheerleader when I was truly booked and blessed. The brainstorming sessions he and I have on what we can do to draw more clientele, what makes the perfect Ad, and creating better Artist/Clientele relationships can go on for hours at a time. His drive and tenacity is what keeps us going as not only a couple but as business partners. I, being the more reserved person tend to only talk about my business when asked about it whereas he is quite the bold one and will say “ Give me one of your business cards” It is that charm and vigor that makes me appreciate him not only as a business partner but also my life partner. He has been there with me through thick and thin and I dedicate this Shoutout to him. I will love him to the moon and back 3,000.
