We were fortunate to catch up with some brilliant artists, creatives and entrepreneurs from throughout the Houston area and they share the wisdom with us below.

Summer Holland | Florist

I often have to remind myself it’s okay to go “slow and steady”. My brain works much faster than my hands can keep up. Additionally I’m learning, as much as you want, you can’t rush the creative process. On top of not being able to actually rush through everything, I always have a much better time when I slow down and focus on just being present and accepting that things worth while take time. Brenda Winkle | Breathwork Facilitator, Somatic Coach and Energy Healer

I decided to say YES to me – my dreams, needs and desires. They say you teach what you most need to know, and that’s true for me. I’ve always been sensitive and able to feel and sense other people’s emotions. As a young child, I turned that sensitivity into people-pleasing. I could anticipate your needs before you knew you had them. I liked it because it made me feel safe to have the people around me feeling calm and happy. Read more>>

Chelsea Gastelum | Native Plant Enthusiast

I do a lot to promote native plants in my community. Taking things to the next level by helping install the gardens elevates it to a conservation level. People don’t always realize the connections of native insects to native plants. It feels good to put in the effort of personally planting, and all the volunteers that help with our program can see the difference. I feel I am creating my legacy here in Lemon Grove.  Read more>>

Yaz Reve | Visual Artist

I believe something important to consider when wanting to become a creative or just to learn about the art industry is that you are not just going to create art. Obviously it is the crucial aspect of being an artist. but it is also understanding that there are multiple layers to making your work reach other people. I would say it depends on the medium you work with but as a visual artist and photographer, besides creating, I start concepts and ideas, constantly research topics, new techniques and publications to accept my work, at times plan and schedule with an entire team, edit, submit, promote, create videos of between the shots or film the process, plan and post on social media etc. Read more>>

Lark Stilson | Tattooer

Like everyone else, when I’m old and grey I want to look back and have a deep sense of fulfillment. I want to know that I overcame circumstances and lived my life fully and wholly doing the things that bring me joy. A life without creativity is not a life filled with love and joy. Although tattooing and drawing is my creative outlet of choice, using my hands to create is what makes me feel fulfilled. Read more>>

Amanda Singer | Founder & Professional Family Law Mediator

So I’m going to fully admit that I hate the term work life balance because no matter how hard anyone tries you’re never going to balance everything. I don’t care how much you try and think you can, it doesn’t happen. More recently I’ve heard the term work life integration and to me that makes so much more sense. My Husband and I welcomed our first child (a daughter, Madison) in October of 2023 and if I thought my life was full before, it is even more full now, although in the most wonderful way! Read more>>

Kwanza Coxbaker, MPH, CMT, RYT 200 | Holistic Health Practitioner & Owner of Tonix Wellness LLC

My work life balance has changed so much in the last few years. I use to passionately charge forward to complete the task oftentimes even forgetting to eat or rest. I thought because I love what I do, rest was not as important. Rather a work life balance wasn’t important because of my passion towards my work. The body has a funny way of demanding rest and mine is no different. I began to get colds and headaches, which are very uncommon for me. I soon surrendered. Not all at once and not overnight, but a process towards equally valuing my productivity and my lack of productivity. Read more>>
