Meet Summer Holland | Florist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Summer Holland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Summer, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
I often have to remind myself it’s okay to go “slow and steady”. My brain works much faster than my hands can keep up. Additionally I’m learning, as much as you want, you can’t rush the creative process. On top of not being able to actually rush through everything, I always have a much better time when I slow down and focus on just being present and accepting that things worth while take time. I actually got a tattoo of a tortoise recently to remind myself that there is nothing wrong with going at your own speed. Plus they are just really cute.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am proud of being mainly self taught. I wanted to enter this industry and applied to many floral shops hoping to learn for a few years and then start my own venture. After I realized it’s a small industry and what I was looking for didn’t exist in the capacity I was looking for, I decided to just throw caution to the wind and start my own business. I took one class in person, a few online, and spent hours watching YouTube. Let me tell you, lots of trail and error. I have so many “ah-ha” moments sometimes I feel like I’m a toddler surprised by and learning from everything. But as time goes by those “ah-ha” moments become second nature and it’s easier to pick up on connections or work through problem solving without feeling like I am re-inventing the wheel. Every time I call my Mom frustrated or overwhelmed she makes me laugh by saying in 5 years when you’re wildly successful people will say “it must be so easy” and ill just be able to laugh knowing the process of getting to that point.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As someone who is originally from the East Coast and lived abroad for a few years I love hosting visitors from out of town and San Diego is one of the easiest places to show people a good time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to shout out the loveliest women I know, my mom, Jean. She has always supported whatever idea I have no matter how far fetched. That doesn’t mean she isn’t opinionated and asks plenty of questions but at any point I know I always have her in my corner. On top of her unwavering support, she has shared her love of flowers with me from a young age, from taking me to the Philadelphia flower convention each year to growing a beautiful garden, I have to credit some of my love of flowers coming directly from her.
