Meet Alicia J Moore | Speaker, Coach, Author of the #1 Bestselling book, “Crushing it in College: Your 7-Step Guide to an Awesome Adventure”

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia J Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia J, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
It’s critical to understand the difference between “Where” you’re going and “How” you’re trying to get there. And it’s really important to understand “Why” you want to get there–what you hope to achieve. There is a key distinction between the destination, and the vehicle you choose to get you there.
Once you’ve set a big goal, your personal North Star so to speak, and if you are deeply connected to “Why” you want that result, then never give up on that destination. You may want to change how you are trying to get there. There may be obstacles, you may have failures and false steps along the way, that may cause you to reevaluate the vehicle you are using to get there. Give up on the vehicle, but not the goal.
For example, Coaches switch up game plans if they are not getting the results they want in the game, if things aren’t working, or if they lose a key player. But they don’t give up on the goal of winning the game!
Know that there are many paths up the mountain. Give up (but not too quickly) on the path that isn’t working for you, especially if you can see another way to get to your destination. Decide whether to go on, around or through obstacles, and give up the path you’re on if you are stuck. But never give up on your North Star. If you are resolute and resilient, you will get there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a senior executive in Silicon Valley, I helped hundreds of people, teams and organizations set and achieve personal and professional goals in the corporate world. I am now on a mission to inspire college students develop a life-long love of learning, uncover their personal potential, define their unique goals, and take control of their life’s path. With degrees and certificates from Stanford University, UCLA School of Law, and the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, among others, and having observed college students both stumble and soar, I know what it takes to crush it in college.
I am in awe of what people can achieve when they have the tools, inspiration and confidence to follow their dreams. I believe in the transformative power of education put in action; and that the sooner people take control of their life’s journey, the more they can contribute to the world. It’s thrilling and humbling to see the impact each person can make in the world when they define their own path and achieve success on their terms. I love being part of that process!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is SO MUCH to do, it really depends on what you like. I personally LOVE Santa Monica beach, the Pier and to bike along the path. The Getty museum is amazing! A trip to the observatory and a walk down Hollywood Boulevard is a must do. The Hollywood bowl is a perfect place to picnic and take in fabulous music. The iconic Rodeo Drive and shopping mall at Beverly Center is fun if you like that; and the Petersen Automotive Museum is impressive, if you are a car buff. Sports, shows, musicals, comedy, art, food—you name it, LA has it going on. Check out what’s going on that week and curate your own adventure.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been blessed to have so many people who have mentored me and supported my success, I could fill at least a seven volume set. It would be a grave disservice to try to list out just one. From the beginning, my family and extended family instilled in me a deep love of learning, encouraged me to dream big, and gave me the confidence that I could achieve anything. I’ve had inspirational teachers and professors, colleagues and peers, friends and acquaintances all who contributed to this wonderful life I’m living! To bring it full circle, I guess I would have to name my sons, James and Will Seifert, who each teach me every day how to experience life through new eyes, challenge me to continue to grow, and who support my new adventures, no matter how out of the box.
